Jun Sato and Keiichi Asai were the chief character designers at tri-Ace for Star Ocean 3. Other character designers include Eiko Sawamura, Nana Kaneda, Masasi Nakagawa, Yutaka Watanabe, Kenichi Kaneko, and Tatsuro Torikai.

Characters
Fayt Leingod
Fayt Leingod (フェイト・ラインゴッド Feito Raingoddo, Fate Linegod in Japan) is the protagonist of Star Ocean 3; the player controls Fayt throughout the game. Fayt is a 19 year old student of symbological genetics in the Bachtein Science University. He comes from Earth. His father, Dr. Robert Leingod, is a famous authority on symbological genetics, a highly controversial scientific field.

Fayt is somewhat lazy when it comes to his college work and takes every opportunity during his vacation to Hyda IV, a famous resort planet, to ignore that work. He does this mostly by playing games: specifically, combat simulation holographic games. When Hyda IV is attacked and Fayt is lost on an underdeveloped planet, the combat games prove themselves to have been good practice with his weapon of choice — the sword.

Upon being stranded on the underdeveloped planet, Elicoor II, Fayt eventually discovers that his father experimented on him and embedded symbols into his genes. Fayt was given the power of Destruction. Upon the awakening of this power, Fayt destroys a Vendeeni battleship carrying soldiers attempting to abduct him. Fayt's power of Destruction also allows the party to harm the entities within 4D space in the latter half of the game.

Fayt uses his power of Destruction to cast Symboloy that he gains later on in the game. He casts different spells on his swords to create weapons that carry different elements. Fayt can create combos, but his attack is just average. His defense, however, is the best in the game.

He is voiced by Souichiro Hoshi in the Japanese version and Steve Staley in the U.S. version.

Sophia Esteed
Sophia Esteed (ソフィア・エスティード Sofia Esutīdo) is a childhood friend of Fayt Leingod. She is a 17 year old Earthling (human).

Sophia was born on the orbital colony Moonbase and then moved to Earth. She is a fairly odd girl, at least for the era Star Ocean 3 takes place in, for she enjoys cooking, cleaning, and basic things traditionally considered "feminine". Because she is such close friends with Fayt and his parents, as well as her parents and Fayt's parents working together, she is considered a member of the family and refers to Fayt's father and mother as "Uncle Robert" and "Aunty Ryoko". (Fayt and Sophia are not, in fact, actual cousins; Fayt, early in the game, makes a comment that Sophia's father was more interesting than any of his "real" uncles.)

In game, Sophia is caught up in the attack on Hyda IV with Fayt. She escapes with Fayt, but they are soon split up by different escape pods. Fayt does not meet with Sophia again until the second Disc of the game, at the Kirlsa Training Facility. After being rescued she joins the party on their trip to Moonbase, where, Sophia learns that she, too, was experimented on by Dr. Leingod and Dr. Esteed as a child and given the power of Connection. Sophia uses this power on Styx to allow the party to enter the 4D world.

Because Sophia has studied Symbology, she has the ability to learn all spells and use them against the enemies. She uses weak melee attacks, but she has the ability to take away MP, too. Sophia will be able to heal your characters' wounds and cure status ailments, so she will help throughout the entire journey.

She is voiced by Atsuko Enomoto in the Japanese version and Michelle Ruff in the U.S. version.

Cliff Fittir
Cliff Fittir (クリフ・フィッター Kurifu Fittā) is a member and previous leader of the anti-Federation Organization Quark. He is 36 years old and a Klausian born on Klaus III. He is incredibly strong, with stamina that far outpaces that of Earthlings. The explanation given is that Klaus III has gravity that is stronger than Earth's along with the fact that the atmosphere there is composed of higher levels of nitrogen and less oxygen.

Quark, an organisation originally founded and led by Cliff, is considered a terrorist organization by the Federation, though Cliff's goals are not the destruction of the Federation, but rather the strengthening of independent planets and weakening the Federation's centralization of control. The Klaus system is a major sympathizer with Quark. Though on the outside he may seem like a brash, brawn-oriented man, Cliff possesses a strong knowledge of military tactics and politics and is quite amicable. As someone bearing a "modern" education, he is also capable of being an engineer in a pinch, as both he and Fayt have the advantage of several hundred years of progress over the inhabitants of Elicoor II.

Cliff tracks down Fayt on Vanguard III at Quark head Maria Traydor's behest, knowing considerably more of Fayt's true nature than Fayt himself. Cliff is trying to deliver Fayt away from the Federation which would seek to use him in the future as a military weapon and enlist him into Quark's ranks instead. Unfortunately, Cliff's planned escape goes awry, and he and Fayt crash-land into the capital of Airyglyph on the underdeveloped planet Elicoor II. After being set free by Aquarian agent Nel Zelpher, he guards and guides Fayt about, trying to protect him. After Maria comes to Elicoor II, Cliff has a more minor role, aiding the party against both the Vendeeni and the Executioners.

Cliff fights with fist gauntlets, rejecting blades or guns. In a conversation in a cathedral with Fayt, Cliff claims to be an atheist. He is voiced by Hiroki Touchi in the Japanese version and Dave Wittenberg in the U.S. version.

Maria Traydor
Maria Traydor (マリア・トレイター Maria Toreitā, Maria Traitor in Japan) is the mysterious leader of the anti-Federation group Quark. She is 19 years old and an Earthling (human). She is the voice of reason in most situations and tends to be rather blunt.

Maria, as an orphaned baby, was experimented on along with Fayt Leingod and Sophia Esteed to be a part of Dr. Robert Leingod's plan. Her genetics were encoded with Symbols and she was given the power of Alteration, allowing her to "charge up" objects and make them more powerful, and even destroy them. She was adopted by fellow scientist Jessie Traydor to be watched carefully. This did not last, however, and with Jessie's death Maria came into Quark's hands. Later on, the Diplo was confronted by the Federation battleship Invisible, whose captain had decided to end Quark's existence. Using her Alteration power, charged-up torpedoes from the Diplo tore through the Invisibles shields and destroyed the ship. After this incident, she became the new leader of Quark (Taking the post that was held by Cliff until that incident).

Using her new position, she decided to hunt down Dr. Leingod and find out the answer as to why he experimented on her and Fayt. Maria is the one who sent Cliff and Mirage out to retrieve Fayt after the Vendeeni attack on Hyda IV. She feels a connection to Fayt as he was, as far as Maria knew, the only one who had undergone the same treatment; Sophia was also was experimented on, though Maria did not know this. Maria lands on Elicoor II personally after Fayt unleashes his power of Destruction on the Vendeeni battleship, and aids the ruler of Aquios in understanding the galactic politics she'd just been thrust into. She also explains the significance of out-of-place artifacts (OPA) and that the Vendeeni were likely searching for the Orb of Apris.

Upon learning the truth of Dr. Leingod's plan at Moonbase — and that it was not to dominate the galaxy or use her as a Federation weapon — Maria used her power of Alteration to enable herself and the party to survive in 4-D space, as Dr. Leingod had intended.

It is hinted that she is a possible love interest for Fayt. In the Fayt-Maria ending of the game, she speaks of getting married and living somewhere peaceful afterwards, Fayt mentions that finding that person would be the hard part. In response, she tells him that she has two prospects, one of which is Fayt, while the other is "the one she didn't choose," which is usually thought to be Lieber (a crewmember on the Diplo, Quark's flagship; he is known for having a huge crush on Maria).

In battle, she fights from a distance with a gun,or short range by kicking; Maria has trained with Mirage and learned some of her martial arts techniques, such as "Triple Kick" and "Crescent Locus". Additionally, her power of Alteration manifests as support symbology that can improve other characters' strength, defense, and general abilities.

Despite that fact that her last name is transliterated as "Traitor" from the Japanese version, this seems to be a coincidence or an incidence of English, because she is never deceptive in nature throughout the course of the game. She is voiced by Michiko Neya in the Japanese version and Dorothy Elias-Fahn in the U.S. version.

Nel Zelpher
Nel Zelpher (ネル・ゼルファー Neru Zerufā) is a highly skilled covert operations agent of the Kingdom of Aquios on Elicoor II. She is 23 years old.

Nel's father, Nevelle Zelpher, was the chief intelligence officer of Aquios before, and passed the position down to his daughter. He was killed in action and Nel fully expects the possibility of a similar fate. She is prepared to sacrifice herself and others for the sake of her mission, but her kind heart gets in the way (attested to by her associate Clair Lasbard), presenting her with many dilemmas and tough decisions.

In the events of the game, she learns of the crash of the mysterious ship and infiltrates the Airyglyph prison where Fayt and Cliff are held. She aids Fayt and Cliff in their escape under the condition that they assist the Aquarians in the completion of a superweapon; should they refuse, she'll kill them. This way, if the Aquarians cannot have this expertise, at least Airyglyph will not either. After their escape, Nel, Cliff, and Fayt travel slowly towards Aquios as they stop to do things like free Nel's friends or aid people in danger, such as Ameena. Nel succeeds insomuch as Fayt and Cliff agree to help make the weapon (though more out of friendship than threatening), though the weapon ends up as more use against the Vendeeni than Airyglyph. Nel is also one of the three characters from Elicoor II who can aid Fayt at the Kirlsa Training Facility and accompany the party to Moonbase and beyond. If Nel is not recruited then, she can be reacquired later in the game if Peppita did not join the party.

Nel is a skilled warrior both in hand-to-hand combat with a dagger and with Runology, the Elicoorians' name for Symbology. She also has the "Mirror Slice" ability that was Claude Kenni's ultimate attack in Star Ocean: The Second Story. The combat gaming system on Gemity pegs her fighting style as a thief class.

She is voiced by Yuu Asakawa in the Japanese version and Wendee Lee in the U.S. version.

Albel Nox
Albel Nox (アルベル・ノックス Aruberu Nokkusu, Arbel Nox in Japan) is the leader of the Black Brigade, the infantry branch of the Kingdom of Airyglyph's military. His nickname is "Albel the Wicked" and in one-on-one combat he is said to possess skills comparable to Duke Vox, the commander of the Dragon Brigade. He is 24 years old and a native of Elicoor II.

Lord Glou Nox, Albel's father, was good friends with Count Woltar, the third leader of Airyglyph's military, and Count Woltar came to look after the young and mischievous Albel. Albel's left arm was severely burned as a result of a failed attempt to make a partnership with a dragon, as per the custom of his nation, in a ceremony called the "Accession of the Flame Ceremony." Glou Nox saved Albel from death, but at the cost of his own life. This has led Albel to self-loathing, as he thinks that he did not deserve to be saved as he had failed. It has been hypothesized that because of a fear that someone will sacrifice themselves to save him again, he keeps others at arm's length, so that he (and they) won't get hurt again. Regardless, Albel is socially inept; he speaks little, and that which he says is often derogatory or threatening in nature, and he often refers to others as "maggots," "worms," and "fools."

Albel has since worn a clawed gauntlet over his wounded and scarred arm. He prefers to take no prisoners and leave no survivors in battle, a lack of mercy that perhaps explains his nickname of "the Wicked." In the events of the game, Albel is first encountered by Fayt, Nel, and Cliff at Airyglyph's Kirlsa Training Facility. However, he only mocks the party before deciding to leave without a fight and report the defeat of his political rival in the Airyglyph military. He is next seen in the Bequerel Mountain Path, where he does in fact attack Fayt, Nel, and Cliff. After he is defeated, Fayt decides to spare his life with the same excuse used by Albel at the training facility ("Easy wins have never been my style"). Unfortunately for Albel, after letting the valuable engineer Fayt escape twice, Duke Vox claims that his repeated failure was because Albel was actually a traitor, rather than an incompetent. The ploy works, and Albel is imprisoned by the King of Airyglyph.

After the Vendeeni attack, Albel is pardoned and sent with Fayt, Cliff, Nel, and Maria's group as a representative of Airyglyph in the taming of The Marquis, the King of Dragons. If Fayt is sufficiently "nice" to Albel in a certain event, Albel is one of the three characters from Elicoor II who may accompany Fayt on his initial journey to Moonbase and beyond. If Albel is not acquired then, he may be recruited upon the return to Elicoor II considerably later in the game if Peppita Rossetti did not join Fayt's band.

His fighting style is based on quick attacks with a katana and making use of his ability to channel energy through his gauntlet. Albel's fighting style is a modified version of the Edarl style swordfighting which the main character of Star Ocean used. Many of his killer moves (Battle Skills) are similar to Claude C. Kenni from Star Ocean: The Second Story ("Double Slash", "Air Slash", "Dragon Roar", etc.). Albel's character design is in the style of bishonen. He is voiced by Isshin Chiba in the Japanese version and Crispin Freeman in the U.S. version.

Roger S. Huxley
Roger S. Huxley (ロジャー・S・ハクスリー Rojā S. Hakusurī) is a young Menodix from the Lost City of Surferio, which lies in the Sanmite Republic on the planet Elicoor II. His father is the village Elder to the Lost City of Sufferio. Like many Menodix, he is obsessed with "Real Man" contests which generally involve doing challenging and/or stupid tasks to prove himself. He is the leader of a very few other Menodix who cheer on his attempts. He is very small at only 2 or 3 feet tall, but is energetic and very full of himself. He is portrayed as a small child that thinks he is grown up. In the game, Fayt, Cliff, and Nel stumble across him trapped due to a challenge gone wrong. If the party chooses to help out, Roger may be recruited. Roger is a completely optional character; it is possible to play the entire game without ever having him in the party. If Roger is recruited and Fayt is sufficiently "nice" to Roger in-game, he is one of the three characters from Elicoor II who may accompany Fayt on his initial journey to Moonbase and beyond.

His fighting style involves a large axe and a number of traps and tricks such as land mines. He is voiced by Mari Maruta in the Japanese version and Mona Marshall in the U.S. version.

Peppita Rossetti
Peppita Rossetti (スフレ・ロセッティ Sufure Rosetti, Souffle in Japan) is a young Velbaysian performer from a group known as the Rosseti Troupe. Orphaned by her mother and later abandoned by her soldier father, she goes to live with her uncle Piccolotto, the manager of the troupe. She is only 14 during the events of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Her main weapons are both her shoes and her bangles, giving her an unusual fighting style.

Fayt first encounters Peppita when barging into Peppita's room by accident while touring the hotel where they are staying. Peppita believes that they are to obtain an autograph, although she becomes indignant upon learning it was just a mistake. It was to be Peppita's first show afterward, but the show never occurs due to the Vendeeni attack. Fayt and Sophia run into Peppita again later as they are fleeing down the evacuation tunnels; the three escape, though Peppita needs to order her guardian Ursus, the circus strongman, to carry Fayt to safety as Fayt wished to turn back for his parents. Peppita does not escape to the same place that Fayt does, however, and she leaves the story for some time. She eventually shows up again at Moonbase, where the player will receive a chance to take her along as a member of the team for the rest of the game. She is, however, completely optional. If Peppita is taken along, she has only a minor role in later events.

Although Peppita starts at level 1 at the end of the story, she has the best attack in the game. She can boost her allies' stats with her dance techniques. Peppita has fairly high agility and hit, but her defense is not anything to be proud of. Peppita can cause many status ailments with her normal attacks and battle skills. Unfortunately, Peppita's attacks have very slow animations that can be interrupted by the faster enemies in the game. If you spend the time levelling her up, Peppita will prove to be one of the best characters on your team.

Peppita is voiced by Masayo Kurata in the Japanese version and Sherry Lynn in the U.S. version.

Mirage Koas
Mirage Koas (ミラジュ∙コアス, Miraju Koasu in Japan) is a long-time friend of Cliff's and partner in Quark. Although quiet and mild-mannered, she is an excellent fighter, as befits the daughter of a dojo-owner. Cliff learned to fight at the same dojo club and throughout their youth had many matches. The rates are rumored to be 54 to 53, but neither ever mentions who holds them. As a fighter, she and Cliff's fighting styles are so similar that only a handful of moves differ between them. While Cliff's moves involve mostly his fists, Mirage's moves involve using both her feet and fists.

On Elicoor II, Mirage splits up from Cliff and Fayt, going about helping behind the scenes. She joins the combat party formally upon the return to Elicoor II on the second Disc.

Mirage, like Adray, is a character that was made a party member usable in combat only with the release of the Director's Cut version of the game. She is voiced by Emi Shinohara in the Japanese version and Kari Wahlgren in the U.S. version.

Adray Lasbard
Adray Lasbard (アドレイ∙ラズバド, Adorei Rasubado in Japan) is a member of the Crimson Blade of Aquios and the father of fellow Crimson Blade Clair Lasbard. Along with Nel's father, Nevelle Zelpher, they succeeded in supporting the growth and foundation of the Aquarian Kingdom. He is a practitioner of Runology, which the Federation knows as Symbology. He is 58 years old. He also seems to be looking to marry his daughter to anyone he can find, he even tried Fayt once.

Due to his brash nature, he is often sent on dangerous missions so he doesn't get in the way of the more diplomatic events. This explains Adray's absence throughout a fair amount of the events of Star Ocean 3, as he was in the northern areas of Gaitt. After the game's end, he took up work as an explorer of the seas away from his previous role on the frontline.

Like Mirage Koas, Adray was added into the Director's Cut version of Star Ocean. Unlike Mirage, who was part of the story in the original version of the game, Adray is a completely original character who was not in the original version of the game at all. He is voiced by Unshou Ishizuka in the Japanese version and Beau Billingslea in the U.S. version.

Luther Lansfeld
Luther Lansfeld (Lucifer Lansfeld In Japan) is the main antagonist in the game. He resides in the 4th Dimension (4D Space) and is the Creator of the Eternal Sphere which is the Universe Fayt and his friends reside in. During halfway through the game Luther sends out the executioners to "delete" the Milkyway Galaxy because the lifeforms in the Eternal Sphere overstepped their boundaries with the study of Symbological Genetics. At the end of the game Luther shows himself to the party at Spiral Tower and has one final battle with the party. Despite all Luther's best efforts he is defeated but succeeds in deleting the universe, but that too fails as the conciousness of others is outside of his creation causing the other to remake the universe.

Albel's fighting style is a modified version of the Edarl style swordfighting which the main character of Star Ocean used.[1] Many of his killer moves (Battle Skills) are similar to Claude C.

Merchandise

A line of Star Ocean 3 character figurines were produced to go along with the game by Kotobukiya, a Japanese collectibles manufacturer. They were released only in Japan.
