ABC Kids is the name given to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's children's programming. ABC Kids via ABC Television broadcasts the greatest amount of children's programing than any other network in Australia.[1] Children's programming on ABC1 are broadcast under the ABC Kids brand in two blocks, mornings, 6:00am to 10:00am, and afternoons, 3:00pm to 6:00pm. In addition to this, ABC2 broadcasts ABC Kids from 10:00am to 4:30pm.

ABC Kids consists of a mixture of both in-house and out-sourced children's television programs. Due to their longevity, programmes such as Play School and Bananas in Pyjamas are iconic within Australia. Popular locally-made drama series include The Saddle Club, Out There, Blue Water High, Ship to Shore and Round the Twist.[1] International programmes which regularly feature in the line-up include Sesame Street, Garfield and Friends, Pingu, Arthur, Fireman Sam and older-years shows Degrassi, Lizzie McGuire, Freaky Stories,Escape from Scorpion Island and Daria.

History

ABC Kids commenced as a replacement in 2000 for the previously aired ABC for Kids branding used on ABC Television and ABC Online. On 7 March 2005, ABC2 launched allowing for ABC Kids' programming to be broadcast for 13 hours a day across ABC1 and ABC2. Currently, ABC Kids offers a wide range of children's programing aimed at 4–6 year olds, and a smaller time in the day for 7–15 year olds. A related sub-brand, Rollercoaster, covers programs aimed at 8–15 year olds and a related website and magazine.
