Harvest Moon DS (牧場物語 コロボックルステーション, Bokujou Monogatari: Colobocle Station) is the first game for the Nintendo DS in the Harvest Moon series of farm-simulation video games.

Story

The game takes place in Forget-Me-Not-Valley, 100 years after Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.[1] Unlike the previous games in the series, which create new characters based on old ones, the characters in Harvest Moon: DS are exactly the same as the ones in A Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, the only difference being that these characters are the descendants of the original ones.

The story of the game mirrors that of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon: Magical Melody for the GameCube while the gameplay follows Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town for the Game Boy Advance. The Harvest Goddess has been petrified and sent to another world by the Witch Princess, and it is up to the player to restore her. In Magical Melody, this is done by collecting magical music notes, but in Harvest Moon: DS, the player must find and rescue the Harvest Sprites from the other world by doing various tasks. Once the player finds 60 out of 101 sprites, the goddess will be revived, and the player will be able to propose to any of the potential wives.

Gameplay

Crops and Trees

Growing crops in this game is slightly different from the other Harvest Moon games. You are not restricted to only your farm land to grow crops. Instead, fields of various sizes are all over the map and different growth rates are applied to each. Each field has its own fertility level; the more fertile the faster your crops grow.

Animals

The player starts with a dog and a cat as pets. Later, he or she may get a horse, which can be ridden and used for farm work. Livestock includes cows, chickens, ducks, and sheep, which can produce milk, eggs, and wool respectively.

Marriage

In order to get married, you need to find 60 Harvest Sprites. The potential wives in Harvest Moon DS are as follows:

  • Muffy, a bubbly blonde who works at the Blue Bar with Griffin.
  • Nami, a smart, redheaded worldly traveler living at the Inn
  • Celia, a traditional, brown-haired farm girl who works for Vesta on a farm.
  • Lumina, the classy and demure brunette granddaughter of Romana.
  • Flora, a blonde woman with glasses who works with Carter at the dig site.
  • Harvest Goddess, the goddess who has been sealed in stone and sent away by her rival, the Witch Princess.
  • Witch Princess, a mischievous rival to the Harvest Goddess.
  • Leia the Mermaid, a mermaid who is rescued by Daryll.
  • Keira, a lovely princess sealed away in a mine because of a spell cast by the Witch Princess.

Cooking

The player has the ability to cook various recipes once he or she purchases a kitchen.

Glitches

Harvest Moon DS has serious glitches, such as the infamous Billion Dollar Glitch, a glitch caused by hiring fishing sprites in the winter. Even though such glitches may work for some versions of the game, it is known to destroy the player's saved game in most cases.

You can marry both the Harvest Goddess and Witch Princess in the Japanese and European version of the game. Some of the US versions are glitched and neither the Goddess nor the Witch can be married because of missing items and a tally function not working correctly. However, Version 1.1 and later releases of the US version have this glitch corrected. To find out what US version a particular cartridge is, look at the serial number on the back of the cartridge. The glitched game has ABCEN0J13, ABCEN2413 or ABCEN0J12 written on the back. The corrected versions have either ABCEN1J09, ABCEN1J01, ABCEU456 or later on the back.

Reception

Nintendo Power gave Harvest Moon DS a score of 6.0/10.0.

Harvest Moon DS Cute

Harvest Moon DS Cute (Bokujou Monogatari Korobokkuru Sutēshon for Gaaru) is a farm simulation video game published and developed by Marvelous Interactive Inc. in Japan, and released by Natsume in North America. It is a simulation game made for the Nintendo DS handheld video game console.

Harvest Moon DS Cute is the same game as Harvest Moon DS, but instead of playing as the male protagonist, the protagonist is female. Players can choose from Jill from the Gamecube game Another Wonderful Life or Clair from the Gameboy Advance More Friends of Mineral Town. Compared to the previous title, most of the bugs have been removed.

A new addition is the Best Friends system, which lets the player coax another girl (including one of the four "magical girls") into becoming your Best Friend by following the same steps as if you were going to marry them in Harvest Moon DS. Instead of a marriage ceremony, the two of you will meet on the beach at a Best Friends ceremony. Afterward the girl will then move into your farmhouse; later on, your best friend will bring you a random child that any of the 5 bachelors could have. This is not available in the U.S. or European version.
