WikiWorld

I am a "constantly learning" member of the Wikipedia experience. I still bump into things...less than before. Intriuged by the level and variety of discussion and input, I have spent many pleasurable hours in pursuit of information about, among other things, Belgium/Low Countries/Flanders, where I was born 61 years ago. I have lived in America for 56 years. I am Flemish...which means I am not Dutch. I do not totally agree with Vlaams Belang. I was taught by BVM nuns and Jesuit priests.

Currently, I am finding my way around the many nooks and crannies of Wikipedia. It's always a surprise to find what, and who, is behind some doors. My main focus is, and will continue to be, the Flemish language. I am eager to participate in a dialogue concerning the language that I was taught at an early age (a Flemish dialect from Stekene/Kemseke op Tromp, near Antwerp)...more than likely it is a language that is slowly dying in its homeland.

"Ik spreek nan oud vlaamse taal. Assek da schrijf is het azo. (sp?) Oaad au goed, eh, vriend!"

It has been surprising to discover that I only spoke a dialect; upsetting may be a better description. As is the case with most dialects, there is very little written ephemera. Therefore, when its no longer spoken it no longer exists.

Perhaps a personal goal may become a Dead (or Nearly Dead) Language site. Also, promoting and prolonging what ever it is that Wikipedia tries to be has become important. Maybe its the concept of something living into eternity or maybe its just trying to write a good, clear, concise sentence..... Whatever it is...I'm havin" fun!

Mission Statement

I promise to use my power and insight to not sit back and wait.......I promise to listen to the voice that speaks to greatness in myself and in others (everyone and thing)------ I promise to remain focussed on my vision rather than my shit.......on my goal rather than the obstacles

Advice from Jimbo

I would simply argue for a focus on the fundamentals here. Assume Good Faith. Use reliable sources. No personal attacks. Try to make sure that what Wikipedia says is actually supported by the sources. Make sure that the sources used are generally considered high quality. Make sure that our view of the sources is not arbitrarily selective in order to paint a particular picture. For questions like this, questions surrounding the precise definition of the Holocaust, remember that emotions will be high and that there is a tendency for people to view people on the other side in an unfavorable light prematurely. If we do all of those things, then threats to "go to the press" or to complain to this or that pressure group will have little impact.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 10:58, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Seconded. You're a great asset to Wiki, Buster. Not only do you give time to the project, but you give time to the people who make up the project. You are the most creative team-player I've met on Wiki. You are imaginative and human about encouraging others towards sticking with what they're doing here. I'll be cheeky, you remind people "We can do it!"
Thanks for the "Lucky Penny", that's a perfect barnstar for Miguel, I'm honoured to be given one as well. I'll make a point of passing them on! Alastair Haines (talk) 22:57, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a bureaucracy

Wikipedia is not a moot court, and rules are not the purpose of the community. Instruction creep should be avoided. A perceived procedural error made in posting anything, such as an idea or nomination, is not grounds for invalidating that post. Follow the spirit, not the letter, of any rules, policies, and guidelines if you feel they conflict. If the rules prevent you from improving the encyclopedia, you should ignore them. Disagreements should be resolved through consensus-based discussion, rather than through tightly sticking to rules and procedures.

Wikipedia is not a battleground

Wikipedia is not a place to hold grudges, import personal conflicts, or nurture hatred or fear. Making personal battles out of Wikipedia discussions goes directly against our policies and goals.

Every user is expected to interact with others civilly, calmly, and in a spirit of cooperation. Do not insult, harass, or intimidate those with whom you have a disagreement. Rather, approach the matter intelligently and engage in polite discussion. If a user acts uncivilly, agitatedly, uncooperatively, insultingly, harassingly, or intimidatingly toward you, this does not give you an excuse to do the same in retaliation. Either respond solely to the factual points brought forward and ignore its objectionable flavoring, or ignore the relevant message entirely. You could also remind the user in question of Wikipedia's policy of no personal attacks in such a situation. Wikipedia is not an anti-leech community. Users should not criticize others on not devoting time to edit.

When a conflict continues to bother you or others, adhere to the procedures of dispute resolution. There are always users willing to mediate and arbitrate disputes between others.

Also, do not create or modify articles just to prove a point. Do not use Wikipedia to make legal or other threats against Wikipedia, Wikipedians, or the Wikimedia Foundation: other means already exist to communicate legal problems.[1] Threats are not tolerated and may result in a ban.

Do not bite the newcomers!
The words, they sit
on lighted screen.
Intention?
Somber, hard and mean.
They lordly prance
with feathers raised.
No words of help,
no words of praise.
Courtesy is not their
Aim.
Civility is not their
game.

They rub us wrong,
we scrape and pant.
We choke back from
their moody rant.
We answer back,
with novice voice,
"I'm here to edit.
I have no choice"

Courtesy is how we'll
live.
Civility is what we'll
give.

This WikiWorld is ours
