Revision as of 15:42, 4 March 2009

This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames primarily held locally. This consists of renaming an existing account in order to vacate the username and allow another user to take it.

Please note that global accounts whose "home wiki" is another project or which have significant attachments on other projects cannot be usurped here; these requests must be made at meta:Steward requests/Username changes (see meta:Help:Unified login).

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

  • The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. or should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.
  • The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances). This includes edits or log actions on other Wikimedia projects. These can be checked through Special:CentralAuth.
  • Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Instructions

  1. Log in to your present account.
    • Please do not leave a talk page message or e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a user familiar with the usurpation process will do so.
  2. Click here to place your request.
    1. Replace "TARGET NAME" with the username you wish to usurp.
    2. Replace "YOUR REASON" with a description of why you want to usurp the account.
    3. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.
If the URL above does not work, simply copy the following text, click "edit this page" and paste it at the bottom of the page. Modify it as indicated.
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}}
Advanced usage
For requests involving renaming an account other than your logged in account, use this:
{{subst:usurp|CURRENT NAME|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}}
For usurp only requests, which leaves your logged in account untouched, set the usurponly parameter to yes:
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|usurponly=yes|reason=YOUR REASON}}
To add an optional non default signature, use the sig parameter:
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON|sig=OPTIONAL SIGNATURE}}
  1. Preview the changes and make sure both names are spelled correctly. Click "Publish changes".
  2. Your request is now complete and ready to be processed after the hold period (usually about a week). If the owner of the target account does not object, a global renamer will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Do not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Please place your request in the section for the current day, at the bottom of the list. It is currently 18:26:39, 3 August 2024 (UTC) (Update).

ThisIsADummy → Sachse

User:Sachse is my original account, however I lost the password and I lost access to the email long ago. The account is unused today, but I would like to change name so that I am able to integrate it into my unified login. Thanks ThisIsADummy (talk) 00:45, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

docsis → caldwelljt

I did notice the request suggested being an established user. The username I am requesting reflects my last name and FI/MI. I thought i created this username, but can't seem to recover it. I have not been established as this user, but I have made quite a number of edits using anonymous due to this name being taken (i have hard time keeping track of different user names, so i typically use this one on all my non-financial websites. with one of three passwords based on my desired security. none of these passwords seem to be working.

I do however wish to mark the sites that I have been editing anonymously (or via IP): A. Most all of my edits are adding internal links to articles that are missing them. correcting internal inaccuracies (such as artical A says article B as saying 50,000 troops, but clicking on the link says something like 55,000 troops. I correct artical A to reflect what has been established in article B.

B. I also ocasionally add/update links to external "offical" sites for items/products referanced without links.

C. Once in a great while I update spelling or grammer (specifically obvious problems where re-editing has left extra words such as "widget a was and/or considered failed", I read around it to see what was intended and update it.

That's it, hope you can help me out. I'm not overly "bold" but I do contribute and it would help me out a lot to login as caldwelljt.

Axmann8 → Axmann

This user, AxMann (Talk), who holds my desired Username (however, I desire the Username to appear as "Axmann", NOT "AxMann", with a capital M.), had a usurpation request filed on his user talk page. The user has not responded with the alotted time of seven (7) days to respond the usurpation request. Therefore, I move that my usurpation request be filled.

-Axmann8 (Talk) 20:30, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that this is all stemming from a miscomprehension of the fact that User:Axmann and User:AxMann denote two different users. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 22:22, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, however, the registration server would not allow me to have the username "Axmann" when I tried to sign up. The capital M in the other user's name didn't matter to the registration server, I guess. And also, I already posted at the "Username Change" place, and they told me that AxMann's username would have to be usurped before I could use the username, "Axmann". -Axmann8 (Talk) 23:38, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 Bureaucrat note: The issue is that although you want User:Axmann (which does not exist), there already exists User:AxMann (which does exist). We don't want to create situations in which different editors have nearly identical names. I am User:Kingturtle, and we won't allow a User:KingTurtle or User:King turtle to exist. That would create tremendous confusion. So, If you want Axmann, you must request to usurp AxMann. Because the account AxMann has been inactive for less than 1 year, your previous request was denied. Wikipedia:Changing usernames guidelines states: "If the target username has good faith edits which were not immediately reverted, and the account owner has not explicitly consented to the rename, then usurping could cause GFDL copyright issues." Kingturtle (talk) 21:45, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand this. That is not what I'm trying to convey. The usurpation request left on his talk page states that if action is not taken by that user in 7 days, the usurpation request will automatically be filled. It has been well after 7 days since that time limit was set. That's why I'm wondering why the usurpation won't go through?
On AxMann's talk page, this exact text was posted by King Turtle:
"If you do nothing: the request will be filled after seven days, and your account will be moved to a generic username. You may request that it be moved to a new username of your choice at any time."

-Axmann8 (Talk) 22:59, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • You can't take over AxMann because he has GFDL significant edits. After 1 year of AxMann not editing though, I don't see an issue with you being renamed to Axmann. Crats may, but we would normally create the account for someone (at WP:ACC) if the "too-similar" user didn't edit in over a year. –xeno (talk) 23:11, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) That clause is only applicable if the person has made no edits. By making edits we agree to have those licensed to the name of our choice and thus, in order for this request to be successful we would need AxMann to agree to have his edits licensed to a different name. Seraphim 23:13, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. Thanks. That's all I was looking for. I wasn't sure where and where not it applied. Could it be taken to the arbitration committee?
-Axmann8 (Talk) 23:18, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Arbcom would likely defer to crats on this one. You only have to wait 4 months until you can ask to take "Axmann". Why not just change your signature until then? –xeno (talk) 23:47, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done Please wait the necessary time, and then reapply. Kingturtle (talk) 12:50, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
