Band history

2008-2009: Chasing Lights

The Saturdays are signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records. Their debut album, Chasing Lights, was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and writers, including Ina Wroldsen and Alex Cartana. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their debut single, "If This Is Love". The single was released in July 2008 and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. 2 of the members Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman are from S Club 8.

The second single, "Up", was released in October 2008 and peaked at number five. The track was featured on a U.S. trailer for the third season of ABC sitcom Ugly Betty. Also in October, the album Chasing Lights was released to generally positive reviews. The album peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart and has been certified gold by the BPI. The third single, "Issues", was released in January 2009 and reached number four.

As well as supporting Girls Aloud, The Saturdays also supported The Jonas Brothers at their Hammersmith Apollo gig on September 11th. They also played at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball at the The O2 Arena in London on December 10th.[1] On November 5th they performed at Perez Hilton's One Night In Liverpool. And played at Cardiff's Gay Pride event. On the Christmas 2008 special of British Nickelodeon show Ross Lee's Ghoulies, The Saturdays made a special appearance.[2] They also guest starred in Hollyoaks Later on the 18th of September 2008 and on a short bbc show called myths.

In January, the group's website announced the release of their fourth single, a cover of the Depeche Mode song "Just Can't Get Enough". It was released as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles, released on digital sales, 1st of March, and on physical sales, March 2nd. On the 8th of March 2009 the single peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, just behind Flo Rida's single Right Round, making this the first Comic Relief single not to reach number one since 1994. However, this is the band's best selling single to date and their highest charting single.[3] The song also was the girl's third consecutive top twenty hit in Ireland, breaking into the top ten at number nine in it's second week of release, giving them their first top ten single and their first top ten appearance in a foreign music market.[4]

The girls have also confirmed that they will be doing a tour of their own in later 2009, naming it "The Work Tour". The girls have stated that the start of the tour will coincide with the release of their fifth single, "Work"."Work" has been a fan favourite since a clip of the girls recording the track was released on their official website. They performed the single for the first time on tv on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway on 15th March.

2009: Second album

The Saturdays said to Digital Spy that they will be releasing their second studio album before the end of 2009 and are very excited to be writing some of the tracks themselves this time around.[5] In the same interview, Vanessa downplayed their previous announcement of "Work" as their next single saying, "It was only ever a rumour" (it is their next single). The only information that is known about the album so far is that they have recorded three new songs so far; Wordshaker, One Shot, and Deeper (which was supposedly written by the band themselves).

Recognition

The Saturdays have had a growing fanbase since their first single was released in mid-2008 and also have a number of celebrity fans including Girls Aloud who they supported on their Tangled Up tour in 2008 and Melody of the Pussycat Dolls. Lily Allen said that she was a fan of The Saturdays when asked who her favourite current act was. Emma Bunton also said The Saturdays reminded her of the early Spice Girls and wished them well while appearing on Loose Women.
