Would it be a lot to ask for how much bandwidth a game server would require for a typical modern game? 68.54.42.141 17:55, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've cleaned up this article, merged listen server and dedicated server; it is now part of the new series on Internet server hosting. Quarl (talk) 2006-01-13 00:12Z

Thanks, excellent work! :) --DaiTengu 10:45, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added ServerWiki as an external link. Yes, I run the site, but I think it's a good resource. --DaiTengu 15:03, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone removed ServerWiki, I re-added it, but after a brief conversation with other Wikipedians it's been suggested that I let someone else add the site if they think it's relevant. --DaiTengu 09:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lower-bandwidth game servers such as Sauerbraten's

Sauerbraten (game) is a popular game that requires extremely little bandwidth for its server compared to most games. Due to that, I think it qualifies for inclusion somewhere in the article, but I'm not exactly sure where, so I hope a more experienced editor will mention this where it's relevant. --Noerrorsfound 01:35, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks you, I didn't know this game/engine, I'll try it next week ! :) (Klem, 193.49.48.244 (talk) 17:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC))[reply]

No sections about custom sound/models/etc... misuse/abuse ?

Many servers admin add custom sounds (usually triggered by typing words in in-game discussion like "lol" or "hi") and many users complains about it : regular player have a 1 to 2 Go of wav sound in the "custom" folder, because same sounds will have different names depending of the server (ex : lol.wav, l0l.wav, 1o1.wav, etc...), they can't remove them because they will have to download them again, it wastes bandswitch and player's time, pollute ambient sound and custom sounds are mostly never configure(!) so they can't be triggered without admin account (=> totally useless download).

(worst example : a song (big hits like "rap" or "r'n'b", not the R&B), initially a 128k or 64k mp3 file downloaded online (not self-encoding), converted into .wav with a shareware version of a poor quality converter (not like the freeware SUPER), resulting an extremely horrible sound, nearly sound like a mobile phone recorded song with too much loud speakers, and you must listen to it until it ends (usually not over 30 sec, thanks shareware limit !), or until one of the server member play it again. Sounds like Clockwork Orange torture, isn't it ?

(nb : you can't mute it with "stopsound" command if the server or the game devs deactivate/don't include this function, indeed you can't mute it while joining the server. Only few games allow download filtering.)

Some admin add custom models/skins too : defaut model modified to add the clan name on it, more realistic model (very rare), nazi/ss model for axis in WW2 games (quite rare), "elite" anti-terrorist/police troop (not often), weapons model modify (replace any weapon model with (example) a m4a1 or a m60/minigun for mg with laser/cookies cooking device/radar/etc... usually without proper animation)(very often). It wastes bandswitch, time and visual environment effect (ex : a US anti-terrorist dark-blue uniform troup with a m4a1 or awp sniper rifle in WW2 battle or in futurist game(lasers, spaceship, etc...).

And, of course, the misuse/abuse of ranking/stats plug-in (using bandswitch = can make lag), leading players to forget teamwork and objectives and focus on kills (even if capture point are more important in official team ranking), and sometimes it gives better/much powerful weapon/power or higher amount of health/armor to "experienced" players (those who play on the same server), making game unbalanced, so newbies or new players leave rapidly the server (oftenly if they complain about it, many insults came from exp.player, telling them to leave if they are not happy with it).
