List of episodes

"Father Knows Worst" is the eighteenth episode of the twentieth season of The Simpsons. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on April 26, 2009.[1] In the episode, Bart and Lisa start struggling in their academic and social lives at school and Homer starts monitoring them and forcing them to do better, becoming a helicopter parent. Meanwhile, Marge discovers a sauna in the basement.[1]

Plot

When Homer, Bart and Lisa go to the Springfield Squidport, Homer accidentally eats a flaming stick (mistaking it for a kebab), the effects of which are worsened by Bart tricking him into drinking lighter fluid. For the next weeks Homer has to wear a tongue cast, with the result that after the cast is removed he develops super sensitive taste buds, becoming a "supertaster", as Dr. Hibbert calls him. Upon discovering that all he can stand to eat now is the bland food from the school cafeteria, Homer decides to eat there every day. His presence in the school leads to him meeting helicopter parents, and being encouraged to interfere in his children's school lives. He decides to help Bart succeed by helping him win a balsa wood competition with a model of Westminster Abbey, and he tries to improve Lisa's popularity by teaching her how to manipulate social groups. Although he has initial success, he eventually ends up wrecking Bart's project during a dream sequence. Ironically, this allows Bart to win, as his is the only project that doesn't look like a parent helped with it (in much the same way as Homer's attempt to build Lisa a Florida costume helped her win in $pringfield). Bart, however, publicly admits to Homer's involvement, whilst Lisa decides that she doesn't want to be popular by aping the shallowness of the other girls.

Meanwhile, Marge discovers a sauna in the basement, which she keeps secret from the rest of the family. As a result of her extensive sauna use, she becomes overly relaxed, and hence fails to control Homer's schemes. After the failure of Homer's plans, however, she comforts him by revealing the sauna's existence.

Reception

The episode received a 3.5/6 Nielsen Rating.[2]

Erich Asperschlager of TV Verdict said "Father Knows Worst" is a "middle-of-the-road" Simpsons episode, as "it lands right in the middle between the best Simpsons episodes and the worst. Even though Marge and Maggie are completely wasted, and Lisa’s storyline barely gets off the ground, seeing Homer try at anything is good for a laugh, especially if that something is parenting and includes him imagining Marge water-skiing on a stegosaurus. Not exactly a model episode, but a decent entry all the same."[3]
