What is it?

With the excitement of Wikimania 2009 looming in the near future, Phoebe proposed (at SF Meetup 10) a regional "WikiConfrence" in similar style to that of the recent Wiki-Conference New York. The conference would take the best aspects from Unconference's and mix it with pre-scheduled events and talks. It would be a weekend long event that would hopefully draw participants from as far as the surrounding states. The idea is was well received with the belief that planning should begin immediately for a possibly spring time event.

Original Notes

  • "WikiConference Bay" - Regional meetup (like rcc)
    • Possible Locations
      • Berkley International house
      • Diablo Valley College
      • Fort Mason (?)
      • Junior Colleges
      • Wikia
      • Local spaces that are cost free/lite
    • Needs more structure than open spaces
      • "Keynotes" - Pre-scheduled talks & debates
      • Still have open space in the schedule
      • We must form a Committee!
    • Get a chapter grant?
      • Hopefully only need to pay for food and coffee
    • Requirements:
      • Rooms - Large central meeting hall, breakout rooms
      • Technology - projectors/presentation
      • Hours - Some places may close at night
      • Food - Access to food on site, or if it is allowed at all
      • Housing - Where do we put people up? Couch surfing, cost of local hotels
    • Photography issues? Some places that might put us up (Like Google) might not like us taking pictures
    • Locations that allow sleepover (like foo?)

New thoughts

  • I think it would be cool to have an "expo" of sorts (Like you'd see at LinuxWorld or any other major Confrence). Instead of different companies hawking their wares, it would allow projects (Or in cases like WP - Subprojects) to promote themselves and maybe gain a few participants. Wouldn't need to be long, an hour or two. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 05:05, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
