La Tigresa del Oriente

Judith Bustos (born 1945) better known as La Tigresa del Oriente is a peruvian singer, hairdresser and makeup artist. Due to the popularity of her videos on YouTube (the video for her single "Nuevo Amanecer" surpassed the 10-million hits mark in 2009), she has become one of the most widely known Peruvian artists in the world.

La Tigresa is well known for her leopard garb, makeup and appearance, and for the choreographies staged by her dancing troupe, which includes three women and one man. Her first single "Nuevo amanecer" (New Dawn) is a self improvement anthem that made her a YouTube sensation in Latin America. She has since been called "The Queen of Youtube" (reina del YouTube) by local Peruvian press.[1] Her videos for her first recording are unique, if low in budget, and were filmed in the Peruvian jungle with her "exotic" dancers. Other singles from Bustos include: "Mi canoa," "Carnaval en Iquitos", "Trabaja flojo trabaja", "Anaconda", "Tránsfuga de amor", "Hombre de Madera", and "Homenaje al Papa Juan Pablo II."

Biography

Bustos was born in the peruvian jungle near Iquitos. Having great interest in singing, she tried to pursue her dreams, but was greatly unsuccessful due to pressure from her parents, and later from her husband, who she married in a failed hope for greater freedom[2]. Bustos became a cosmetologist at an early age, and emigrated to Lima, expecting to be involved in show business in some way, becoming a makeup artist for Lima's television stations and starting an extended career that has lasted over twenty years.

In 2002, with help from several friends, she started writing songs and created the concept for "La Tigresa" and was later convinced of recording several music videos. Around 2006, her videos appeared on YouTube and rapidly became viral, giving her overwhelming fame, and has since been invited to several latinamerican television shows.

According to an interview in the Peruvian newspaper La República, Bustos signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records México for one year. With the first payment of the contract's royalties she bought her first automobile.[1] Some of her fans have released video tributes to her -trying to emulate her act,- and even Tigresa remixes (in techno and reggaeton versions) of her music exist.

More recently, La Tigresa Del Oriente has become greatly active on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, and has an Official Blog to keep her fans up to date with her appearances and the new album she is currently recording.

Recent events: Kántaro Records

In August 2009, La Tigresa Del Oriente announced her second album "La Diva de YouTube" from independent record label Kántaro Records, after failing to get anywhere with Warner Music Mexico[3]. Releasing her first new singles Felina and El Baile De La Tigresa online, and their respective videoclips soon afterwards.

In September 2009 Radio Cumbia Peru, the original uploaders of her greatly popular videos on Youtube announced they were removing the videos from their channel, it was later made public that the reason behind this was that they were asking La Tigresa two thousand dollars for each video kept in the channel, which she declined after considering it blackmail, responding by publishing her videos in higher quality versions at her official Youtube Channel[4].

On September 6 2009, Peruvian channel ATV released a new song called "Reggaeton de Susi" featuring renown singer Don Chezina, which became her third promotional single from the new album. Days later La Tigresa presented her official collaboration with El Pimpo Man in a video called El swing de la gata.

Criticism

La Tigresa's stage act evokes extreme reactions from the general public in Latin America. Critics denounce her stage act as campy (at best) or kitsch (at worst) and make fun of her appearance and lack of formal vocal training. One critic commented that this may apply to mass audiences as well; the comments left about her imply that she reached this level due to a social joke more than talent.[5] Meanwhile fans adore her level of self-confidence, lyrical sincerity and respect for Peruvian folklore and traditions. In either case, her public appeal has transcended beyond Peru and has become noticed by thousands in the continent.

Own program on TV Peruana

After many rumors, his agent told the newspaper Violeta Reaño Rpp Peru the confirmation of the first program of La Tigresa Del Oriente in the Peruvian television, which will be entertainment and interviews. It This show is expected to see its own light at the end of October 2009.
