Season chronology

The ninth season of Degrassi: The Next Generation premiered October 4, 2009 in Canada and October 9 in the States. Season 9 began production on May 19, 2009. Although it is scheduled to air during the 2009–2010 TV season, it depicts the second semester of the 2007–2008 school year because season eight occurred during the first semester of the 2007–2008 school year. This is the first season to air on TeenNick in the United States.

Cast

For the ninth season, twenty-four actors have star billing and appear in the title sequence, no increase but replacements over the previous season. Stefan Brogren, Shane Kippel, Miriam McDonald and Cassie Steele, all original cast members, return in their respective roles as Archie "Snake" Simpson, Gavin "Spinner" Mason, Emma Nelson, and Manuela "Manny" Santos. Returning cast members introduced in later seasons are Jamie Johnston as Peter Stone, Paula Brancati as Jane Vaughn, Dalmar Abuzeid as Danny Van Zandt, Charlotte Arnold as Holly J. Sinclair, Raymond Ablack as Sav Bhandari, Samantha Munro as Anya MacPherson, Jajube Mandiela as Chante Black, Aislinn Paul as Clare Edwards, Melinda Shankar as Alli Bhandari, AJ Saudin as Connor, Sam Earle as K.C. Guthrie, Judy Jiao as Leia Chang, Jordan Hudyma as Blue Chessex, Argiris Karras as Riley Stavros and Natty Zavitz and Scott Paterson as Bruce and Johnny DiMarco.

Actors from season eight not returning this season are Sarah Barrable-Tishauer as Liberty Van Zandt, Marc Donato as Derek Haig (aka the only high school character who could act aside from charlotte arnold), Evan Williams as Kelly Ashoona, and Nina Dobrev as Mia (yay!). All either left the series, or got demoted to recurring roles. Nina Dobrev landed a role on the CW's new hit series The Vampire Diaries much like her fellow former-co-star Shenae Grimes who is now a regular on another CW hit 90210. Their departures brought in four new additions to the cast, Landon Liboiron, Annie Clark, Jahmil French, and Jessica Tyler who play as Declan, Fiona, Dave and Jenna Milton.

Season nine is produced by Epitome Pictures in association with CTV. Funding is provided by The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit, the Canadian Television Fund and BCE-CTV Benefits, The Shaw Television Broadcast Fund, the Independent Production Fund, Mountain Cable Program, and RBC Royal Bank.

Linda Schuyler, co-creator of the Degrassi franchise and CEO of Epitome Pictures, serves as an executive producer with her husband, and President of Epitome Pictures, Stephen Stohn. Sara Snow is also credited as an executive producer again. David Lowe is the producer, and Stephanie Cohen the supervising producer. As well as playing Snake Simpson, Stephen Brogren also serves as the creative producer, and, for the first time, will direct episodes, after previously writing, producing, and directing the exclusive online series Degrassi Minis. The casting director is Stephanie Gorin, the editor is D. Gillian Truster.

The executive story editor is Sarah Glinski, and Matt Heuther the story editor. The script supervisor is Nancy Markle. Episode writers for the season are Duana Taha and Brendon Yorke. The director of photography is Jim Westenbrink, and directors are Phil Earnshaw.
