Rene Garcia Preval was only the second (not the first!!!) President of Haiti to leave office at the end of this term. The first president to leave office was Nissage Saget (1870 - 1874)

Shouldn't this just be at Rene Preval, not Rene Garcia Preval? As far as I know he's commonly referred to as the first. Everyking 09:04, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - I've made the move. CDC (talk) 16:47, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Preval's party

I think Preval's party's name is actually LESPWA, that is the creole word for HOPE. Esperanza is the spanish translation for LESPWA.

Who?

Some have suggested that these privatizations were a result of Préval bowing to the pressure exerted on him by external entities including the IMF.

Who says this, Greg Palast? Hugo Chavez? The Nation? Robert Mugabe?

What is the problem of this statement? Haiti was getting a loan from the IMF at the time, privatization is one of the conditions of IMF loans. Perhaps it needs to be rephrased to prevent it from sounding like this is a bad thing, but beyond that I don't see a problem with the statement. --MateoP 15:14, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

and in any case

wasn't Duvalier elected at first? i don't know how fair the election was, but he was reasonably popular at first. what he ended up doing is another story 134.69.166.25 01:06, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are referring to Poppa Doc, right? Yeah, he was elected, but by '63 he had completely consolidated power amongst himself. --MateoP 02:48, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

President?

The article is saying he's president already, but surely he hasn't been sworn in yet? Everyking 08:55, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Preval's Degree

Note that there is no consensus on whether Preval has a college degree. I have researched a large number of articles online in both Engish and Spanish, Some articles state he has a degree at Gembloux, while thers state that he studied agronomy at two Belgian universities but did not earn a degree. I suggest that the part about his degree be removed until this biographical issue can be resolved.

Historical accuracy

If it is true that he left with his family in 1963, then the Belgian Congo was already not the Belgian Congo anymore, but the Republic of Congo {Leopoldville). Maybe that needs to be updated. Themalau 23:57, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
