Japandroids

Japandroids is a garage rock [1][2] duo from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada [3] .

History

Japandroids was formed in 2006, and comprises Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums. The two met at the University of Victoria, where King studied science and Prowse anthropology.[4] They originally intended to find a third member to act as lead vocalist, but later decided to forego having a specific lead singer and simply share vocal duties. The name Japandroids came from two other band name ideas: Japanese Scream (from Prowse) and Pleasure Droids (from King).[5] Occasionally they will spell it without vowels, as JPNDRDS.

The band self-released two limited edition EPs, 2007's All Lies[6] and 2008's Lullaby Death Jams,[7] prior to signing with independent Canadian label Unfamiliar Records in January 2009. Their debut LP, Post-Nothing was released in Canada in April 2009, originally on vinyl only. They were subsequently signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. in June 2009. Post-Nothing was released worldwide in August 2009, and was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize [8] as well as nominated for the 2010 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year.

In February 2010, Japandroids announced the release of a 5-part singles series (to be released periodically throughout 2010). Each single would consist of an original A-side of previously unreleased material written during the Post-Nothing sessions and a cover B-side. The first single in the series, Art Czars, was released in April 2010. The band also announced their intention to re-release their now out-of-print EPs as a compilation entitled No Singles. It is scheduled to be released in May 2010.

The Post-Nothing Tour is an ongoing concert tour by the band Japandroids. It began on June 24, 2009 in Edmonton, Canada and has included over 150 shows across North America and Europe. [9] The tour is currently planned to run through 2010.

The Post-Nothing Tour began on June 24, 2009 in Edmonton, Alberta, with shows across North America and Europe.[10] The tour was originally scheduled to begin on April 23, 2009. After performing only one show, Japandroids were forced to cancel the remainder of their first full-scale North American tour (28 cities over six weeks) due to a health emergency. On the morning of April 24, 2009, King was checked into Calgary's Foothills Medical Centre to undergo emergency surgery for a life-threatening perforated ulcer.[11][12] Among the canceled dates was their show at the Sasquatch! Music Festival.[11] Touring resumed June 13, 2009 after King's recovery with a performance at Vancouver's Music Waste festival.[13]

Japandroids performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on January 4, 2010.[14]
