Biography

Gottwald was born in Westerly, Rhode Island and grew up in New York City.[1] He began playing the guitar at age thirteen and attended the Manhattan School of Music for two years. After he was a student there, he auditioned for the Saturday Night Live Band and won out over 80 applicants, joining Saturday Night Live as the guitarist in 1997. Gottwald performed with the band for ten seasons, leaving at the end of the 2006-2007 season. As a guitarist, Gottwald performed with Herbie Hancock, Michael Bolton, Phoebe Snow, Jack McDuff and Shabba Ranks, and played with the house band for the TV series Amateur Night at the Apollo.[3]

While not working with the Saturday Night Live Band, Gottwald made dance music and hip hop backing tracks in his home recording studio. He remixed songs for Mos Def, Black Star, Bon Jovi, and KRS-One & Zack de la Rocha.[4] He released the 12" single "Wet Lapse", under the name Kasz, for Rawkus Records, and remixed the theme from the film Mortal Kombat.[3]

His songs also used a combination of live and electronic instruments, also known as electropop. He has also written and/or produced for Ciara, Paris Hilton, Jibbs, Lady Sovereign, Kelis, Leona Lewis, Missy Elliott, Pink, Lil' Mama, the Backstreet Boys, Daughtry, The Veronicas, Carlos Santana, Three 6 Mafia, Vanessa Hudgens, and the Sugababes. [5]

Dr. Luke was named Songwriter of the Year at the 2010 ASCAP Pop Music Awards and received 10 ASCAP Pop Music Awards for the year as the songwriter and publisher. He has received 4 Pop Music Awards from ASCAP in 2009, 3 awards in 2008, one in 2007 and two in 2006 (fifteen ASCAP Pop Music Awards in total since 2006). In 2009, he was working on the debut album of American singer Kesha, and worked with Miley Cyrus on the hit song, "Party in the U.S.A.", which topped the iTunes top songs. In December 2009 Billboard named him as one of the top 10 producers of the decade.[6]
