The greatest difficulties arose in the process of developing a new twelve-9D100 diesel with increased efficiency on the basis of diesel 2D100, and the creation of the locomotive chassis with low weight and improved braking and dynamic characteristics. The other goal was to develop an improved design scheme of power and reliable in operation of electric machines for the new locomotive.

The first locomotive of the new design, designated TE10-001 (Kharkiv), was released in November 1958.

One of the innovations in the Soviet locomotive factories became the principle of whole body supporting structure which was used until this point only [[Czechoslovak]] [[CHS1]] [[electric locomotives]] and electric trains Riga ER1. The body of the locomotive was based on two three-axle trucks, aligned with the cart locomotives TE3.

At the locomotive were the installation of six new traction motors EDT-340А designed and manufactured plant "Electrotyazhmash for [[gas-turbine electric locomotive]] G1-01. For the first time in domestic locomotive building was used a principally new system of automatic control of the traction generator that provides a specified voltage dependence of the generator from its current, allowing a fuller use of the power of diesel, which was not possible previously.

Office of diesel with the aid of the controller driver KM-1501, the main lever of which had zero and 15 working positions.

With much less weight than the two-section locomotive TE3, TE10 diesel locomotive could successfully replace the locomotives that worked a single thrust.

From 1958 to 1961, Kharkov plant produced 26 locomotives of this series.
In the process of production some changes were made in the design aimed at improving the work and reduced weight of the locomotive. In particular, in addition to traction applied 340А EDT-EDT-340g and ED-104 (the latter - with a simultaneous change of gear at 69:14). After these and several other relatively large changes in the service weight of the locomotive was 129 tons with an increase in fuel (up to 6500 kg) and sand (up to 950 kg).

Diesel locomotives of this series at first worked at the Kuibyshev Railway, and then in the North Caucasus. On 1 January 1976 all the locomotives in this series except one were on the South road, working mainly on maneuvers. Exclusion of locomotives TE10 from inventory mainly occurred in the 1980's. In 1990 a total of three locomotives TE10 were written off.

Teplovoz TE10 (in russsian Тепловоз ТЭ10) is a Russian diesel-electric locomotive.

Name

The name of this locomotive (ТЭ10) is from тепловоз с электрической передачей, тип 10 meaning diesel-electric locomotive type 10.
