OpenSolaris [[Just enough operating system | JeOS]], (pronounced {{IPA-en|ˈdʒuːs|}} "jiuce"), is a reduced installation of the Sun-managed [[OpenSolaris]] distribution available as virtual machine (VM) images for a variety of system virtualization platforms. The images are as small as 139 MB and offer an alternative means to quickly deploy OpenSolaris on a platform of your choice. You can tailor your deployment by adding packages from network-based package repositories and performing any other application-specific configuration changes.

OpenSolaris JeOS, (pronounced /ˈdʒuːs/ "juice"), is a reduced installation of the Sun-managed OpenSolaris distribution available as virtual machine (VM) images for a variety of system virtualization platforms. The images are as small as 139 MB and offer an alternative means to quickly deploy OpenSolaris on a platform of your choice. You can tailor your deployment by adding packages from network-based package repositories and performing any other application-specific configuration changes.

Features

Pre-installed JeOS installations are provided by the OpenSolaris JeOS project for a variety of system virtualization platforms. Using these heavily reduced, text-based, headless server-oriented forms of the Sun-managed OpenSolaris distribution, developers and administrators can more easily produce application-tailored installations of OpenSolaris in virtual appliance, cloud and bare metal environments.

  • Small footprint alternative to the Live CD-based installation
  • Pre-installed packages for common features used by virtual appliance developers
  • Hardened out the box using Solaris security best practices demonstrated in the Immutable Service Containers (ISC) project.
  • Scriptable, SSH-based control of initial boot process to enable appliance build automation

Available downloads

OpenSolaris 2009.06 JeOS Prototype downloads are available in 10+ most popular Virtualization platforms as native and Open Virtualization Format (OVF) VM images for the following Virtualization platforms:

Intel/AMD x86 32bit and x86-64bit

SPARC

Note: OpenSolaris OS JeOS Prototype VM images have both 32bit and 64bit architectures in single image.
