Mural
For quite some time there has been a street mural of his album cover, right on the street he spent most of his life on and mentioned in his songs. It's partially obscured here on google street view but there are plenty of photographs of it. Perhaps a thumbnail image of it+ caption could be included on the page if a legal photo can be found? Please help if this falls within policy.

Big L is not, was not, and should not ever be considered anywhere near what really is 'underground hip-hop', so don't put it there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.189.155.164 (talk) 02:28, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
- 'Underground' is a label easily applicable to the commercial success of the artist regardless of their content, so in a way he could be considered such. He never received the popularity that some other battle/mafioso/gangster rappers received, for example Notorious B.I.G or Mobb Deep. _ morde t .. 13:44, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
NPOV Language
This article needs to be checked for NPOV language. There are four instances of the word "amazing," to see some examples of such language. The issue isn't balance but neutrality- an encyclopedia doesn't talk about how dope, amazing, tight etc someone's flow is, not in the way it is done in this article. --Revaaron (talk) 01:23, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Who really cares if this is NPOV.. if you're looking up Big L on Wiki, you're probably a fan and seeing this type of article is somewhat comforting ```` —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.222.246.15 (talk) 17:30, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Huh? The point of Wikipedia articles isn't to boost or comfort, but to be encyclopedic. If you are a fan and looking to be comforted, then perhaps you would be better served by a memorial fan page or memorial magazine article. Revaaron (talk) 17:57, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
whats your big problem with using the word "amazing" when it comes to an encyclopedia ?, stop hating on Big L my brother.Grandmasterbash (talk) 19:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- This "amazing rhymes and wicked metaphors" and "consistent in writting amazing lyrics and throwing amazing punchlines and has an amazing flow"[1] is not encyclopedic. It's opinion and does not belong in an encylcopedia. That's not "hating", that's Wikipedia. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 17:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thank god someone took out that hideous sentence! :D --Revaaron (talk) 21:45, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
he has a point.. your run of the mill rap fan isn't going to just randomly type in big l's name .. who cares about the tone of the article.. anyone who knows his rhymes inside and out know all of this praise is warranted.. some of these little policies are stupid.. who would complain about something like this? it's as informative as it needs to be. Enjoisktboarding2 (talk) 03:51, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you don't like some of these "little policies," go hang out elsewhere. Subjective descriptions just don't cut it at WP. When someone goes to the 2Pac article, it shouldn't be a mishmash of over the top praise and hate, some debate between a couple of wannabe b-boys talking smack while they wait for their moms to pick them up from soccer practice. It doesn't matter how dope some random rap fan thinks his lyrics are- this is an encyclopedia, not a fan forum. A good example to follow is Tupac Shakur's article. --Revaaron (talk) 21:45, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
yes its suppose to be npov u dumb roosters... not everyone likes rap, they may have heard his name mentioned by someone or in a song. if you have to write praise, say "he has been called..." blah blah and cite references, dont make it like you just asked some random dick on the streets his opinion and wrote it down :|
Big L was ill: a titan on the horizon felled before he reached his prime. That being said, a wiki entry by definition should be NPOV Sigaba (talk) 05:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed. Claims that "Big L was ill" or that he was a titan are fitting in fan pages or rap wikis, but this is supposed to be an encyclopedia. --Revaaron (talk) 21:45, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Lyrics
im the one that put up the lyrical dedications
Plz stop deleting that part, it took me a while to gather it all, RIP Big L" - thaoutlawz-69
If you add them again, they will continue to get deleted. Like stated below, it is not appropriate for an encyclopedia entry. If you want to make that information available to the world, send to a fansite, or create your own on Geocities or something. --Revaaron (talk) 01:22, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Who are u to say what's appropriate and what's not...?? If he wants it to be there.... why are u removing it?? Does it hurt you in any way that it is there?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.245.232.225 (talk) 01:27, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
I cleaned up this article as best as I could with what I had to work with. If some details are incorrectly restated then they should be corrected within the context of the new article by someone who has direct knowledge of Lamont Coleman. What needs to be added is something about his parents, his brother (hinted at) his religion, his schooling, etc., all of which must have had an influence on his life. Finally, there is a COPYRIGHT question here. The original editor included a number of lines from a recording. Who owns the copyright to them and does Wikipedia have the right to reproduce them? MPLX/MH 17:19, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that permission is required. Isn't the use of extracts for education and criticism exempt from copyright restrictions? Tim Ivorson 20:05, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, fair use does cover that but I was not sure if this was the entire lyric and I could not find any attribution. Glad you waded in, this subject is totally outside of my realm of musical knowledge or interest. (Wrong generation - I am still a big fan of Little Richard.) MPLX/MH 21:29, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I don't think that this article should say that L's death was untimely. That's not to say that it wasn't, but that to say so would not be NPOV. Alternatively, having already said that he died at 24, you might say that his death was obviously untimely. We needn't state the obvious.
I don't think that there should be a brief biography section, unless there is also a detailed biography section to distinguish it from. Let's leave it to readers to work out that the section is short.
I think that, "When I'm lifted, I'm high," and, "With new clothes on, I'm fly," should not be separated from other elements of the list by commas, because they contain commas.

I reverted an edit that seems to be plagiarised. Tim Ivorson 07:59, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
I think it should be noted that saying L was known for his freestly ability has no truth in it. At least not in the true context of the word 'freestyle'. The tracks labeled as freestyles, or radio performances called freestyles were actually written verses. This is fact, because I'm sure many of you have heard L spit the same 'freestyle' verse multiple times. It would be disrespectful to Lamont's memory to say that any of his recordings were sloppy enough to even be considered freestyles.
No, the verses were originally freestyles, he would keep a verse from a freestyle if he liked it and reuse it.
I don't know a whole lot about Big L, but this article seems very POV; for example: "Big L is also one of the more overlooked storytellers in rap." I think the discriptive words should be cleaned up by someone with a little more knowledge of the subject.
In response to Tim Ivorson, what proof do you have that he was spitting witten verses. That's Insulting To L's Memory To Accuse Him Of Spittin' Writtens Unless U Have Absolute Proof. --Steve36 05:11, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'm assuming a lot of you never heard Big L spit a freestyle on the radio. I mean OK, he has reused rhymes before, and he has spit writtens on the radio... but that's not what he always did. It might be better said that Big L was known for his punchlines, and for his writing overall, to alleviate the "freestyle" discussion... Khal 15:45, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Children Of The Corn
In The Unreleased Tracks Section, The Entire C.O.C. Is Listed. The Tracks Are Available Thru Digga (C.O.C. Producer's) Web Site. Could A Subsection Be Created That Lists These Tracks As Recorded With Children Of The Corn
Date of death
It says "On the evening of November 14, 2006 Big L was shot..." Which is obviously wrong, but when I tried to edit the page it had the correct date on there. 84.70.15.127 22:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Jenny

RIP Lamont Coleman
R.I.P. Big L, you were a big inspiration to hip hop music
why is that in the article? this is an encyclopedic entry, not a memorial. while big l may have been an inspiration, saying that has no place in an article like this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.96.165.176 (talk) 19:35, 19 December 2006 (UTC).
Big L on Roc-a-Fella? think not!
Big L had no intention to signing to roc-a-fella because he already had his own record label
Jay-Z has said that they were going to do the deal and that it was a week away from happening when Big L was shot. They respected each other and had worked together before, (Graveyard & 7 Minute Freestyle) not too sure how it works but i think L Would have been able to continue with his Flamboyant records as a footprint on Roc-a-fella, He probably would have been able to do his own thing and sign some artists to flamboyant, whilst being able to work with the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Just Blaze etc for his albums as well as making appearances on other roc-a-fella albums. Personally I don't know if that would have actually worked out that well because Big L had a Raw/Underground sound, whilst Jay-Z has a more clear and commercial feel to his music.
Details of Big L's Murder
Can someone clean this section up? On one hand it says that his murder remains unsolved, yet then it says someone was found guilty and got 38 years. This is very unclear. I would think there should be online references somewhere. Bill shannon 22:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Still messed up
There's still a lot of confusion about this section. There are not any sources on this, and the theory posted right now, how he angered a gang in NY with his Ebonics song (I'm assuming), is the first I've ever heard of it. Nothing I read about his death seems to be consistent, because I've read a bunch of different things, like one, his brother shot him out of jealousy, and two, that his brother was in debt to a gang who ended up killing L accidentally. I've read that the investigation was unsolved, but I've also read that the guy WAS caught. I've tried looking for sources before to figure out what really happened, but there's way too many inconsistencies. I think the section should instead say that there is more confusion about the circumstances of his death than there is certainty, because it seems like people would rather edit the section and write in their own personal, uncited theory. Y'all seen this? (News on Big L's new album)
"With the tragic slaying of New York rapper Big L, many of fans haven't been able to view the true side of him, after The Big Picture, loyal friends of the decreased rapper have went to the vault to find new unreleased tracks. His manager and partner in Flamboyant Entertainment, Rich King, talks about the album:
"We have remastered them to a quality that would seem like he was here today, it's going to be a two disc album with 24 tracks, ain't gonna be no huge list of appearances or remix of tracks, the only people who will be on the album will be the folks that Big L knew and loved, it's going to be what Big L wanted", the only confirmed producer DJ Premier, explained more about the album. "The title will be "Real Legends Never Die", we tried to have the album feel like Big L was really there, so it won't feel like we just put random tracks and that's it, it really has a Notorious B.I.G. Life After Death-feel to it, the three final tracks are, in my opinion, the most saddest and depressing tracks ever heard, a side that people never got to see from him.
The first single will be out in May and it's called "Do You See Me?", a track that represents Big L himself, a very powerful track. We are still working on a date for the album but I promise the fans of Lamont Coleman aka Big L, that it will be released in 2007."

"Dedications"
This list, aside from being badly formatted, isn't suitable for an encyclopædia article; it would be fine for a fansite or the like. Please stop adding it. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 13:22, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- And they keep re-adding it to this day. Angrymansr (talk) 20:07, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

- First, Wikipedia isn't about supporting anyone or anything. Secondly, though, the problem with the link is that it's to a site that isn't yet up... You have tried clicking on "Enter" haven't you? It leads to a non-existent page. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 09:31, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- The content is up and nowhere does it claim to be Big L's official website. It says it is a "Big L related site" and claims to be the "Official Big L Community", whatever that means. Angrymansr (talk) 20:13, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

3rd King
Peoples in Harlem wouldn't consider 2pac a king. Most likely, the 2 kings he was referring to was Nas and Biggie.

POV problems
A whole lot a POV in this article. A few samples: "his critically acclaimed debut album" "kept perfecting his craft" "fast approaching the line that divides pastime and profession" "gave insight into fabled Harlem shootouts and legendary Harlem street life" "some of the best New York producers, deejays, and emcees on the mic, members came from several boroughs bringing to life the true sounds of New York hip-hop" "Astoundingly, all it took was" "and of course" "released worldwide at the summer of 2000 to critical acclaim" "exemplifies the gritty, punchline heavy battle raps" "Big L is the logical progression" "seemed poised to conquer mainstream rap" Etc.
There are also a lot of unsourced facts and possibly some copyright vios.
Anyone else want to clean some of this up before I start trimming it down? - Mdsummermsw (talk) 16:19, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
The first and fourth examples aren't POV. The fourth one might have a little bit of POV in it, but it doesn't need to be deleted completely. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.188.26.116 (talk) 19:10, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
this article is terrible and needs a lot of work. Also it contains a lot of falsehoods such as his album went platinum. L deserves a better page. This sounds like it was written by one of his friends. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.105.7.183 (talk) 01:19, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Death
Although it's still unclear as to who exactly killed him, I've put a new heading as to how, when and where he died. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zipoetes (talk • contribs) 00:02, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've removed same. This section, with varying details, has repeatedly popped up. As soon as we can source it, we can keep it. Until then, it isn't verifiable and doesn't belong here. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 14:13, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Lamont (99) Big Lee (03)
I think someone should include some info about the murder of Big L's older brother "Big Lee" who was in prison at the time of his death. There tombstone has both of their names and they are both buried together in a Harlem cemetery. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.80.105.24 (talk) 03:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Religion?
Big L was known for his dark lyrics and said that he was going to hell and that he worshipped Satan in the songs "Danger Zone" and "Devil's Son". People have told me that he was either a satanist or an atheist. Is this true, or were his dark lyrics just an act? I would like to know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.37.139 (talk) 01:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
This is obviously a joke from L. He was ofc no satanist, but he played like few other rappers with clishes and used elements of religious issues. I guess he was christian, cause he had a crisscross-chain round his neck, or maybe even an atheist, but NO satanist, lol. 89.217.195.102 (talk) 23:14, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

The paragraph on death has been vandalised.
Some mod can help, right? I can only assume there's a way to retrieve the old one. I would use a web translater, but the original phrasing would be best. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.107.22.10 (talk) 11:12, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that the big l documentary titled 'Street Struck' will; be released on Big L's birthday (May 5) in 2010. This production has been highly anticipated and finally it is being released.
