Jenna's stepbrother. Aria Montgomery is portrayed by Lucy Hale . She moves back to Rosewood with her mother, Ella, father, Byron, and younger brother, Mike, after a year long absence in Iceland. She is secretly tormented after discovering her father having an affair with one of his students. After meeting a man named Ezra Fitz, Aria starts a secret affair with him after discovering that he's her English teacher. Aria and Ezra struggle with the forbidden nature of their relationship as Aria is tormented by keeping the secret of her father's past affair from her mother. Just as Aria decides to tell the truth, she finds that "A" has beaten her to it in a tell-all letter to Ella.

Hanna Marin

Hanna Marin is portrayed by Ashley Benson . She was Alison's lackey and has taken Alison's place as the "It Girl," along with former loser, Mona Vanderwaal. Alison used to constantly tease Hanna about her weight, which in turn made Hanna bulimic, and is something "A" taunts Hanna about. Hanna shoplifts for attention from her workaholic mother, Ashley, and her father, who left her and her mother a year ago, along with Mona. When Hanna is caught, Hanna's image-conscious mother sleeps with the police officer, Darren Wilden, to get the charges dropped and avoid scandal. Hanna's chaste boyfriend, Sean, vows his virginity, much to Hanna's anger, which she takes out by stealing and crashing Sean's car. Hanna's absent father returns with a fiancée and a seemingly perfect stepdaughter and forces Hanna to take responsibility by getting a job at Sean's mother's dentist office.

Spencer Hastings

Spencer is smart, pretty, and always in the shadows of her smarter and prettier older sister, Melissa, who's newly-engaged to Wren, who seems to have more of an interest in Spencer than in Melissa. Spencer finds herself increasingly attracted to her sister's fiancé, whom "A" warns Spencer not to kiss or "A" will tell. Spencer and Wren do kiss and are caught by Melissa, who insists that Wren moves out. Spencer has trouble writing a paper for class because Melissa and their parents are mad at her, so Spencer submits one of Melissa's old papers as her own. Spencer is horrified when her paper is nominated for a national award.

Emily Fields

Emily Fields is portrayed by Shay Mitchell . Emily is a competitive swimmer who comes from a conservative family. She befriends Maya St. Germain, the new resident of Alison's former house. Maya introduces Emily to marijuana and the girls grow closer. A message from "A" reveals Emily to be curious about her sexuality and hints that she had kissed Alison in the past. Emily's mother invites Maya to stay for a while, and she and Emily share a room, in which they also share a bed. Emily's boyfriend becomes possessive and almost forces her to have sex with him, but she is saved by Toby. Emily breaks up with her boyfriend and kisses Maya in in a photo booth at a party; someone steals the photograph. Emily starts to befriend Toby, a former target by Alison. While at the homecoming dance, Emily runs from Toby and accidentally falls through a hole onto her school's stage.

Alison DiLaurentis

Alison DiLaurentis is played by Sasha Pieterse . Alison was the former "It Girl" of Rosewood and the leader of the clique. Ruling the group with an iron fist, Alison had gone missing during a slumber party; a year later, her disappearance is still unsolved. When Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily begin receiving threatening messages from "A" reminding them of their darkest secrets, they suspect that "A" is Alison, whose body is soon discovered buried in her former backyard.

Recurring characters

Ella and Byron Montgomery

Ella and Byron are the parents of Aria and Mike Montgomery. Ella is a kind, caring, stay-at-home mother. Byron is an adulterous history professor who cheated on his wife a year ago with his student, Meredith. Ella unknowingly befriends Meredith. Byron regrets the affair and Aria struggles with keeping the secret from her mother to protect her. The relationship between Byron and Ella is strained after Ella reads a letter from "A" revealing Byron's affair.

Ezra Fitz

Ezra Fitz, or Mr. Fitz, is portrayed by Ian Harding. The new English teacher in Rosewood who becomes romantically involved with Aria the day before she appears in his class. They try to resist their attraction, but fail. Ezra then takes an interview in New York.

Mike Montgomery

Mike Montgomery is Aria's younger brother. He is currently suffering the results of his parent's break-up, along with Aria. This involves several violent episodes.

Ashley Marin

Ashley Marin , Hanna's workaholic mother who is raising her daughter on her own after her husband left her. Abandoned by Hanna's father, Ashley recognizes Hanna's wild behavior as a cry for attention. Warning her daughter that any indiscretion in their small town can humiliate them, Ashley avoids Hanna being charged for shoplifting by sleeping with the arresting officer. Even though Hanna's father and her are no longer together, she longs to get him back.

Melissa Hastings

Melissa is Spencer's older sister who is engaged to Wren. She is the family's "golden child". She is their parent's favorite. She has a bad attitude towards Spencer. She sees Spencer kissing Wren and insists that he moves out.

Maya St. Germain

At the beginning of the series Maya's family moved into Alison's old house. She and Emily bond over some of Alison's discarded belongings and Maya's marijuana. Quickly after meeting, Maya and Emily develop feelings for one another. The discovery of Alison's body buried under the gazebo on Maya's property brings the girls closer. They kiss at a party, but Emily starts to push Maya away when she reengages with Toby Cavanaugh. After homecoming, where Toby seemingly attacks Emily, Emily realizes she wants to have a relationship with Maya, despite what others think. Emily and Maya are dating.

Mona Vanderwaal

A former social outcast who longed to be accepted into Alison's group. In the year since Alison's disappearance, Mona has transformed herself into a popular social leader alongside Hanna.

Jenna Marshall

Known as Jenna Cavanaugh in the book series, the younger stepsister of Toby. Jenna lost her sight due to a prank played by Alison, intended for Toby. Jenna was in psychotherapy once to talk about Toby. The girls suspect her to be the mysterious "A." Before Alison went missing, Jenna and her step-brother Toby were sexually active with each other.

Toby Cavanaugh

Jenna's stepbrother. In the episode "The Homecoming Hangover" Emily passes by The Marshall/Cavanaugh household in her new Toyota Corolla where she sees Toby's wrecked motorcycle and police at the scene; she also sees Jenna Marshall, Toby's stepsister crying on the porch. Although after he returns he and Emily have a talk about what really happened. He also revealed that he didn't love Jenna the way she loved him, Ali helped him get rid of that problem. At the end of season ones finale he is arrested for the murder of Alison.

Sean Ackard

Sean was originally Hannah's crush before Allison disappeared, and they began dating sometime after her disappearance. Hanna's anger and embarrassment at Sean's refusal to have sex drive her to steal Sean's car for and ultimately crash it. Sean forgives Hanna and reveals that he is a member of RLW, Real Love Waits, which is a virginity club.

Ben Coogan

Emily and Ben dated at the beginning of the series. Emily began to avoid Ben when she began to have feelings for Maya, and quickly ended the relationship after he attempted to rape her.

Wren Kim

Wren was engaged to Melissa until he develops feelings for Spencer. When he was caught kissing Spencer by Melissa, she calls off the engagement and kicks Wren out of their barn. He then apologizes to Spencer for making a mess with her and her sister and told her that he wishes that he met her first.

Alex Santiago

Alex, played by Diego Boneta, is Spencer's new love interest who works at the country club Spencer's family attends. Spencer asks Alex to homecoming, but he leaves early after being ignored by Spencer most of the night and being manipulated by Melissa into thinking Spencer was using him to make her father angry.

Darren Wilden

Darren is portrayed by Bryce Johnson. He is a detective investigating the murder of Ali. He continually questions the girls and takes advantage of Hanna's mom.

Lucas Gottesman

A social outcast who begins to form a friendship with Hannah, who he secretly has feelings for.

Noel Kahn

He is one of Sean's friends and Aria's crush before Ezra. After Ezra leaves Aria, he steps in to comfort her. Hanna and Sean decide to go on a double date with Noel and Aria, where Noel tells her that he has feelings for her and that he will keep his options open. Finally, he asks her out on a date after her parents' separation in which Aria accepts.

Jason DiLaurentis

Jason is the brother of Alison who keep investigating about the mysterious case of his missing past sister.

Ian Thomas

Ian is a former boyfriend of Melissa Hasting where secretly kiss with Spencer.

Peter Hastings

Peter is the biological father of Spencer.
