Prithviraj Chavan (Marathi: पृथ्वीराज चव्हाण) (born 17 March 1946) is an Indian politician belonging to the Indian National Congress party. He is a Member of the Parliament of India representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He is currently the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Early life

Prithviraj Chavan was born in marathi family in Indore Madhya Pradesh to D. R. Chavan. He has a B.E. (Hons.) from BITS, Pilani (Rajasthan) and also a M.S. from University of California, Berkeley (U.S.A.).[1] He pursued higher studies at the University of California and spent some time working in the field of aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US before returning to India and entering Indian politics.

Prithviraj Chavan is the Minister of State for the ministries of Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and in charge of Prime Minister's Office. Earlier he was also the Minister Of State in charge of the Department Of Atomic Energy. He is a supporter of introducing genetically modified (GM) Bt brinjal in India.[2] He has been criticized for supporting the position of the biotechnology companies in the GM crops issue.[3][4]
