Template:Fix bunching Total Drama Island (sometimes shortened to TDI) is a Canadian animated television series which lampoons the conventions commonly found in reality shows. The show and its sequel seasons are collectively referred to as the Total Drama series. It premiered on the Canadian cable television specialty channel Teletoon on July 8, 2007. The show was created by the creators of 6teen, another Teletoon program. It was the third Cartoon Network show outside of Adult Swim and Toonami to have the U.S. rating of "TV-PG-D", and a parental-guidance warning after every commercial break and at the beginning of the show (the first two being Sunday Pants and IGPX; its rating in Canada for most episodes is "G", or else "PG"). On the Cartoon Network airing in the United States, some content has been removed from the episodes by censors in order to keep the rating open to a younger audience; for example, putting in words instead of long bleeps, for the episodes "That's Off the Chain" and "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon".

Plot

The series is a reality show parody where twenty-two teens settle at Camp Wawanakwa, a fictional island located in an unspecified area in Muskoka, Ontario. The plot is somewhat like Survivor and Endurance, with social and living environments similar to The Real World. At times, the show also spoofs elements of Fear Factor and Iron Chef. Every three days, the campers must participate in the challenge which normally has at least one winner for their team that met the qualifications of the challenge and gave their team invincibility. The losing team (up until the point where the teams are disbanded) is called to the campfire at night, where Chris (the host) passes out marshmallows. Those who receive a marshmallow get to stay, while the one who does not get a marshmallow has been voted off the island, and must walk down the Dock of Shame to the Boat of Losers, which will take them away and they will "never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, come back, ever" (according to Chris; this was proved a lie in "No Pain, No Game", when he brought Izzy and Eva back into the game). About halfway through the competition, the teams are disbanded, which means (as Chris puts it) "every camper for themselves," and the winner of the challenge only gets invincibility for him or herself. This process of elimination continues on until one player remains on the island. At the end of the series, the last contestant will win C$100,000 (US$93,761.68[4]).

Characters

The Total Drama Island cast consists of the host Chris McLean, the chef, Chef Hatchet, and the twenty-two teens that make up the contestants. The contestants are split into two groups of eleven: the "Screaming Gophers" and the "Killer Bass". The campers for the "Killer Bass" are, Duncan, DJ, Bridgette, Tyler, Eva, Courtney, Katie, Sadie, Harold, Geoff and Ezekiel. The campers for the "Screaming Gophers" are Owen, Trent, Gwen, Izzy, Heather, Lindsay, Justin, Noah, Cody, Beth and LeShawna.

Production

Total Drama Island originally began as Camp TV and was developed, financed and produced by Fresh TV. The series was animated at Elliott Animation. The series was directed by Todd Kauffman and Mark Thornton. It is primarily targeted at eight- to thirteen-year-olds, and the creators, Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, studied what pre-teens liked and disliked about reality television shows in the writing process.[5] Fresh TV Inc. partners McGillis, Pertsch, Elliott and Irving produced the series.[6] The budget for the series was $8 million.[7] It was animated in Flash,[8] at Elliott Animation's studio in Toronto.[6] As with many other Teletoon series, Total Drama Island has also been dubbed into Quebec French prior to its release. Every cast and crew member on Total Drama Island had to sign a confidentiality agreement not to tell who the winner was.[9] All the characters were designed by Kauffman.[10] An early name for the series was Camp TV.[11]

Various voice actors on 6teen have also lent their voice for Total Drama Island: Christian Potenza as Chris; Julia Chantrey as Eva; Drew Nelson as Duncan; Megan Fahlenbock as Gwen; Adam Reid as Justin; Stephanie Anne Mills as Lindsay and Katie; and Rachel Wilson as Heather. The aforementioned voice actors (Christian Potenza, Megan Fahlenbock, Adam Reid, Stephanie Anne Mills and Rachel Wilson) play the roles of Jude, Jen, Wayne, Kirsten, and a recent crush of Jude's named Melinda Wilson on 6teen. Emilie-Claire Barlow plays a recurring role as Chrissy on 6teen and plays Courtney on Total Drama Island.[12]

Total Drama Island Interactive

Total Drama Island Interactive was an online game marketed in conjunction with the television series. It is produced by Xenophile Media. Development of the site was done largely by Toronto based Jam3media. By registering a free account, the player could play games to earn points for marshmallows. Marshmallows are used as money in the game so the player can buy various items. The top 22 players at the end of the season were entered into a draw, where one of the players had their character in the game make a cameo appearance in the finale [as an intern] (ultimately testing out a part of the ending obstacle course, and falling into a river)[13] The games were based on the challenges in the show, and were updated weekly as new episodes aired.[13]

Thus, I found the parody to be very funny despite the fact that it was a cartoon."[17]

Winners

  • Owen - a winner because he beat Gwen in a race to a finish line (as Owen began to tire and Gwen began to pull away, Lindsay & Izzy made brownies and used Chris' fan to blow the scent to Owen, which gave him the strength to dash to the finish line and beat Gwen at the last second to win Total Drama Island). Winner in the original version.
  • Gwen - Gwen turns out to be the winner in an alternate ending where Owen charges at the brownies, and eats them (but not crossing the finish line). While Owen is distracted by the brownies, Gwen manages to pass the finish line first, winning Total Drama Island. In Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Poland, Uruguay, Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Costa Rica, both versions were shown, with Owen winning at the end of a two-day long marathon and Gwen winning in a rebroadcast of the finale the following day.
