Rothschild (variant: Rothchild) is a popular German surname. It is a habitational name from a house distinguished with a red shield (Middle High German rot (or roth)= "red" + schild = "shield"), the earliest recorded example dating from the 13th century.

The standard German pronunciation is [ˈʁoːt.ʃɪlt] (approximately "Rote-shilt") - the s is part of the second syllable schild. In English the surname is usually Template:Pron-en "Roth-child" or /ˈrɒθs.tʃaɪld/ "Roth's-child".

The German surnames "Rothschild" and "Rothchild" are not related to the Scottish surname "Rothchilds": roth or rot [Germanic] = red. roe [Old Gaelic] = red-hair or red-head. roe in the ancient Danish language, signifies a king. childs = child or children. The name childs was given to youths, page boys and valets/varlets from seven to fourteen years of age, while receiving their education for knighthood. Therefore "Rothchilds" = red-headed child/children or child of a king receiving an education. The Rothchilds families are principally from Scotland.
