The Slackers are the most notable band to emerge from the New York City ska scene. Formed in Brooklyn in 1991, the band has honed and developed a unique sound with mixes of ska, rocksteady, reggae, soul, swing, garage rock, and jazz. The Slackers have become a staple member of the worldwide ska scene by releasing consistently better and more diverse music and extensively touring North America, Europe, and elsewhere. They have released many albums on Epitaph or HellCat Records.

Several side projects have stemmed from the band including the Dave Hillyard Rocksteady 7 and the SKAndalous All Stars, as well as an acoustic solo project by Vic Ruggiero
