PhD reliable source?
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
I see emphasis on reliable sources. Is a PhD thesis a reliable source? _Ninatukawewe (talk) 19:19, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
- See WP:Reliable sources, which includes in the section headed "Scholarship":
Finished Ph.D. dissertations, which are publicly available, are considered publications by scholars and are routinely cited in footnotes. They have been vetted by the scholarly community; most are available via interlibrary loan. UMI has published two million dissertations since 1940. Dissertations in progress are not vetted and are not regarded as published. They are not reliable sources as a rule.

- (ec)The answer doesn't appear to be clear-cut. Check out this discussion, which I perused - I think it is saying Master thesis no, Phd, maybe, depends. --SPhilbrickT 19:32, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
- Assuming you are talking about a specific thesis, you could post a question about it at WP:RSN and get specific feedback on a particular thesis.--SPhilbrickT 19:35, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

- ok. Thanks for your replies. I've read WP policy and the other links supplied. From what I see, those who have PhDs support WP policy as it stands while those who have not bothered to get a PhD suppose themselves competent judges to counter WP policy. Since a PhD is only granted to someone by others who have PhDs and that the PhD thesis (or dissertation) is the basis for granting the PhD, then It seems to me that those who suppose themselves qualified to challenge WP policy and yet do not have a PhD don't have a leg to stand on. I also noticed several unsupported assertions, which makes it even more doubtful of their ability to judge competently that this or that PhD thesis is reliable or not reliable. It seems to me that WP policy is the only valid way. Ninatukawewe (talk) 16:11, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
