The Institute of Business Administration (Bengali: ব্যবসায় প্রশাসন ইনস্টিটিউট) of the University of Dhaka - commonly known as IBA - is a government funded institution for business-education in the South Asian Country of Bangladesh. It was established in 1966 in collaboration with the Karachi IBA, the Ford Foundation, and Indiana University, Bloomington but is currently only affiliated with the University of Dhaka. Late Professor M.Safiullah was the founder-director of IBA. IBA pioneered Business Administration education in Bangladesh. It also pioneered Semester and credit based education system in Bangladesh.

History

IBA was founded in 1966 in collaboration with Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, under a Ford Foundation Financial Assistance Program with the objective of providing professional training to provide graduate level education to financially challenged students. It is widely regarded as the best business school in the country.

From its inception in 1966 until 1993, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) was the academic program offered by IBA. In 1993, after a review initiated by Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque (Former Director, IBA; and former Treasurer, Dhaka University), a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was added. Prior to that, in 1970s, the M.Phil and Ph.D. programs were introduced.

IBA has so far had 19 BBA batches and 45 MBA batches. In 2007, IBA introduced an Executive MBA (EMBA) program to meet the huge demand for quality education in EMBA. There are plans to revamp the BBA program (offering double majors, for example), too.

It is the first educational institution in Bangladesh to introduce semester system in contrast of year long traditional system of Bangladesh.

Hizb-ut Tahrir - which has well known global links - has been active lately in universities and the government may well have been worried about its increasing influence among students.

— Sabir Mustafa, Bengali editor for BBC[2]

The outfit was banned as it had been carrying out anti-state, anti-government, anti-people and anti-democratic activities for long in the country

On April 2010, after the arrest of Mahiuddin Ahmed who was still active after the Bangladesh Government imposed the ban, University of Dhaka sent him into a forced leave for an "indefinite period".

Later on June 2010, along with Mahiuddin Ahmed , four Chittagong University students were arrested after having distributed jihadi books and leaflets.[5].

IBA Interior

IBA has an informal reading room popularly known as "Bunker" to IBA students. It is named so because the only access to it is down the library stairs. It is one of the prominent gathering place for the students at IBA. IBA cafeteria (At the ground floor of IBA building) is unique in its nature as it has no tables or chairs to sit on. People either stand beside the wall-mounted shelves or seat on the cafeteria floor to have their food.
