Ordubad is a rayon of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Its capital city of the same name is the second largest town in Nakhchivan. In addition Ordubad Rayon includes 47 villages and settlements.
Etymology
Ordubad Rayon's historical name is Goghtan (also Gokhten or Gokhtn).
Ordubad's name came from the Turkic pronunsiation originally known as Armenian Vortvat or Vorduar.
Vortvat in Armenian for "the wormy place". Banks of Araxes river really has a vast of worms and medieval Armenians made outstanding inks of this worms for book printing called as Vordan karmir (means: reddish worms).
Ordubad in Turkish for "sity of army".

Its main city was a small town of Vortvat until 737 AD.[1] (since the XIX century known also as Ordubad). Goghtan gavar (canton) was known by numerous Armenian monsateries [2]. From the 890s it goes under Arabic rule but remained populated by Armenians, the Goghtn state's center was the town of Goght'n (which was probably either Votrvat (Ordubad) or Agulis).
