Arthur Christmas is an upcoming British/American 3-D computer animated film being produced by Aardman Animations and Sony Pictures Animation, and slated for release on December 23, 2011.[1] The film is being directed by Sarah Smith, co-directed by Barry Cook, and it stars James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent and Bill Nighy. Set on the North Pole, the plot tells about Santa's son Arthur Christmas, who must complete a mission before Christmas morning.
Plot
Set on Christmas night, the story of Arthur Christmas (James McAvoy) revolves around Santa's ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole, his family and especially around his son, Arthur, an unlikely hero with a mission that must be completed before Christmas morning.
Cast
- James McAvoy as Arthur, good-natured but clumsy younger son of Santa.
- Hugh Laurie as Steve, Arthur's cool and incredibly capable older brother.
- Jim Broadbent as Santa, the guy in charge at the North Pole.
- Bill Nighy as Grandsanta, Santa's 136 years old cranky father, who hates the modern world.
- Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Santa, dedicated wife and mother.
- Ashley Jensen as Byrony, lowly elf from the Giftwrap Battalion.
Production
Arthur Christmas is the first film being made by Aardman in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment.[2] The movie was first announced in 2007, under the name Operation Rudolph.[3][4]
Aardman and Sony spent 18 months on pre-production on the story and design in the U.K. before relocating to Sony's Culver City, US, for another 18 months of production.[5] On April 27, 2009, it was reported that the production has begun with Aardman and Sony Pictures Imageworks working together on animation.[6]
