Mylo Xyloto (pronounced /ˈmaɪloʊ ˈzaɪlətoʊ/) is the upcoming fifth studio album and first concept album by English alternative rock band Coldplay, set for release on 24 October 2011.[1]

Writing and recording

Chris Martin stated that he does not think "bands should keep going past the age of 33", but later rephrased this to say that what he meant was that they must proceed "as if it's our last, because that's the only way to proceed".[2] Bassist Guy Berryman, who earlier wrote that the band will "just have to start work and see how it shapes up",[3] reported that the band would return to the studio:

"We've already got lists of song ideas. We never stop writing. We go into the studio with all the best laid plans then what we end up with is not what we intended. It's just exciting to wonder what will come out the speakers in a year's time. We have very exciting things lined up. It's time to take our music down different directions and really explore other avenues."[4]

One of the goals for the album was to write tracks with greater use of experimenting with acoustic instruments, manipulation, and electronics by having or not having to revisit the style from Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. With Chris Martin deciding not to release a solo album, it was rumoured the fifth album would be their last, but Martin later denied this. Upon re-entering "The Bakery," the time to write and record songs were thought outside the box by the band to be more ambivalent than what they wanted. Coldplay were still making new material there, so they relocated to another building after continuing the Viva la Vida Tour in mid-late 2009. Chris Martin predicted the style of the album as having lesser fanfare and more "stripped-down" before moving there.[5] He also said that the title of the new album "will probably begin with an M."[6]

A question from the "Oracle" page at the band's official website noticed that they were "already in the studio working on new ideas for the next album" but that "[t]hey did have a break after the recent tour dates [that took place in South America were] finished."[7] Coldplay were recording their fifth studio album partly at "The Bakery".[8] The band reportedly are working with Brian Eno again.[9] The band resumed recording the album in December 2009 in a South London church, nicknamed "The Beehive".[10] When the album was still in the production stages, a person referred to as "Roadie #42" noticed the album was not finalized, though the songs had finished the "skin and bones phase" (the same person noted Coldplay completed some of the "killer tunes").[11]

After confirming several festival appearances, the band premiered new songs at their Rock im Park (Nuremberg, Germany) live performance. "There was a fair chunk of new material tonight - a whole six songs of it - only one tune of which anyone in the audience stood any chance of having heard before," said Roadie #42.[12] The names of the new songs coined by him were "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall", "Princess of China", "Major Minus", "Hurts Like Heaven", "Charlie Brown" (named after the Peanuts newspaper comic character of the same name), and "Us Against the World".

On 9 September 2011, the band announced that they had finished the album, posting a picture of the tracklisting on their website.[13]

On 15 September 2011, the band debuted the song "Up In Flames" at Austin City Limits Festival.

Style

Mylo Xyloto will be a concept album. According to Chris Martin, the album is "based on a love story with a happy ending." Lyrically, the album is inspired by "old school American graffiti" and "the White Rose Movement." Martin also said that the album was influenced by HBO TV series The Wire.[5] Coldplay have stated on several occasions that they want their next studio album to be "more acoustic" and "more intimate" than its predecessor, 2008's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. The band has been recording in a North London church, in their new recording studio, "The Beehive", and in the studio used for the recordings of Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, The Bakery. The band has been recording with producer Brian Eno who was one of several producers involved with Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.[citation needed]

Release and promotion

The album was set to be released in December 2010 as a "decade-ender", but was postponed to 2011 since the album was far from finished as Coldplay concluded their Viva la Vida Tour. Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland mentioned that the album would be released in the latter year.

The album will be available on the 24th of October 2011 on CD and on vinyl. A special edition of the album that includes the CD, digital download and the vinyl copy along with copies of the bands studio notes, stencils, a poster, a pop up book and stickers will also be available on the 12th of December 2011.[14]

Singles

Although fans speculated that the first single would be "Christmas Lights" (which was released on 1 December 2010 at 8 pm)[15][16] the "Oracle" stated "the song [Christmas Lights] isn't penned for the new album however; it's just a single release that happens to be out this week...",[17] thus denying such rumours. On a later statement the "Oracle" restated: "Can I categorically say here and now that Christmas Lights is a stand alone song and has absolutely no bearing on what is to follow… The short answer is no."[18]

On 31 May Coldplay announced that their new song "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" would be released on 3 June at 12 pm BST via digital download.[19] The single contains elements of "I Go to Rio" written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson.[20] On 21 June 2011, Coldplay's website announced that the band would release a digital EP containing the songs "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall", "Major Minus", and "Moving to Mars" on 26 June.[21]

The second single, "Paradise", was released on 12 September 2011.[1] [22] That same day, Chris Martin announced that Rihanna would be featured on "Princess of China".

Track listing

The track listing was announced on the band's website on 9 September 2011.[13][23] All tracks written by Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, Brian Eno and Chris Martin, except where noted.
