La Costa Canyon High School is one of the high schools in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Located on 88 acres (360,000 m²) in south Carlsbad in northwest San Diego County, La Costa Canyon opened in September, 1996. The students attending La Costa Canyon live in Encinitas and south Carlsbad. These communities include both beach and agricultural areas and lie in proximity to the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, and Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. La Costa Canyon High School was honored as a 1999 California Distinguished School and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2001[citation needed].
The school mascot is the Maverick.[1]
General Information
2,548 students were enrolled at La Costa Canyon High School in 2009, with a senior class of about 700. The average number of students who drive into school is 1567. The pupil-teacher ratio is 34:1. The average SAT score is in the 1150-1200 range, making LCCHS one of the most academically acclaimed public schools in the state and ranked 232 by USNews.com out of 91,957 public schools in the US. For the 2008-2009 school year LCC had an API of 817. Over 97 percent of the students are college bound. 77% of the student body is Caucasian and 17% of the student body is Latino, the rest being a mix.
Faculty
The faculty consists of a principal, three assistant principals, one dean, six counselors, a media-specialist, and over 125 certificated staff members. Approximately 70% have degrees beyond a Bachelor's Degree. Over the past 13 years, La Costa Canyon has seen 7 different principals. The newest administrative additions are Dr. Kyle Ruggles, the new 09-10 principal, and two new 09-10 assistant principals: Bjorn Paige and Mark Van Over. They join existing assistant principal Doug Kamon.[2]
Speech and Debate
As a member of the Southern California National Forensic League District, La Costa Canyon is ranked within the top four hundred speech and debate teams in the nation. Its tournament, the San Diego Winter Classic, is a Tournament of Champions qualifier for Policy Debate and Public Forum Debate and a National Individual Events Tournament of Champions qualifier for Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, and Humorous Interpretation. With multiple nationally ranked speakers and debaters, La Costa Canyon has advanced students at the national tournament in a variety of events, including Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, Congressional Debate, Original Oratory, and Humorous Interpretation. Succeeding Two-Diamond coaches Mr. Michael Grove and Ms. Krista deBoer, Ms. Andrea Cartwright coaches the team and teaches the three classes offered: Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Speech.
Athletics
La Costa Canyon offers a highly competitive full men's and/or women's athletic program in the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Surfing and table tennis are club sports available to LCCHS students. La Costa Canyon has many teams ranked highly on both a national and state-wide level and has produced numerous CIF division champions.
The most recent athletic success is that of the boys' lacrosse team who finished their 2010 season undefeated going 23-0, and winning the CIF San Diego title after defeating the Torrey Pines Falcons 12-6. The team is currently ranked 15th in the nation by computer rankings, and 1st in the nation by win-loss factor.
