Activ Solar GmbH, headquarterd in Vienna, Austria is engaged in the production of polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) for the solar PV industry and the development of large-scale photovoltaic power stations. The company is a member of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association.[1][2][3][4]

Activ Solar maintains offices in Vienna and Wiener Neustadt in Austria, and in Kiev, Zaporozhye, Simferopol and Odessa in Ukraine.[citation needed]

Operations

Polysilicon production

Activ Solar produces high-purity polysilicon at its subsidiary PJSC Semiconductor Plant, located in Zaporizhia, Ukraine. The production of semiconductor materials at the original Zaporozhye Titan and Magnesium Plant dates back to 1935. The facility formed the foundation of PJSC Semiconductor Plant, which began production of semiconductor-grade polysilicon in 1964. It was separated from the Zaporozhye Titan and Magnesium Plant in 2002.[5]

The plant historically was also the only manufacturer of high-purity trichlorosilane in the Soviet Union. After comprehensive refurbishment and modernization, PJSC Semiconductor Plant reached an annual capacity of 2,500 metric tons of polysilicon and 27,000 metric tons of trichlorosilane (HCl3Si). The facility produces ~20 metric tons per annum of monosilicon using legacy equipment with a plan to expand to ~400 metric tons per annum. The factory also produces silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4), hydrogen, nitrogen and hydrochloric acid.[6]

Solar PV project development

Activ Solar develops, finances and realizes large-scale solar photovoltaic installations. It has developed three solar PV power stations with more than 120 MWp of installed capacity on the Crimean Penninsula. At the end of 2010, Activ Solar completed construction of the 7.5 MW Rodnikovoye Solar Park.[7][8] In October 2011, Activ Solar developed one of the largest solar power stations in the world, the 80 MW Okhotnykovo Solar Park and in November 2011, Phase III (60 MW) of the Perovo Solar Park, was completed.[9][10]

Research and development

Activ Solar's R&D efforts are commited to the continious improvement and innovation. Activ Solar maintains a Research & Development joint-venture with Diamond Aircraft Industries with an aim to develop innovative products and applications for the PV industry. Diamond Activ Solar exhibited a solar aircraft wing at the Paris Air Show 2011 Le Bourget. The wing displayed showcases an innovative PV application for solar technology in light aircrafts.[11]

Ownership

According to company register, Activ Solar is 100% owned by Liechtenstein-registered P&A Corporate Trust.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). According to Ukrainian meedia referring to a British register, P&A Corporate Trust owns British firm Blythe (Europe) Ltd, which owns 35% of the Kiev company Tantalit which is the nominal owner of the residence of President Viktor Yanukovych at Mezhyhirya.[12]

According to other sources, Activ Solar is controlled by Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev and his brother Serhiy Klyuyev through SLAV Beteiligung GmbH and Slav AG.[5][13][14][15][16] CEO of Activ Solar, Kaveh Ertefai, is Serhiy Klyuyev's son-in-law.[12][14] Klyuyev's companies are registered at the same building where Activ Solar has its representative office in Ukraine.[14]

According to the report by Ukrayinska Pravda, Solar Activ was founded by Slav Beteiligung GmbH, owned by Slav AG, investment firm of by brothers Kluyevs. In late 2008, the ownership was transfered to Kave Ertefay. In July 2009, ownership was transfered to P&A Corporate Trust.[17]
