"Walk Away"
Song

"Walk Away" is the fifth official single release from American singer Kelly Clarkson's second album Breakaway.

Song information

Following in the vein of her previous down-with-love singles "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes," "Walk Away" finds Kelly reprimanding her boyfriend for letting her down in various ways and not devoting himself to the relationship. She demands that if he can't give her what she needs, that he should "just walk away".

Initially, "Addicted" had been planned for release as a fifth single, but was cancelled when RCA deemed its dark tone and message too similar to that of her previous two singles, "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because Of You". "Gone" was then picked as the replacement, only to be dropped due to similarities to "Since U Been Gone." Finally, after two months of U.S. pop airplay, "Walk Away" was released as the fifth single from Breakaway in 2006. By that point, however, "Gone" had already amassed considerable airplay on popular radio stations in major markets such as Atlanta, Boston, and New York City.

Music Video

The music video for "Walk Away" was shot February 4-5th in Los Angeles. It was intended to be released on February 25th, at the TRL Awards, but was taken out because director Joseph Kahn said it needed some "touching up". The video premiered on TRL and MuchOnDemand on March 7, 2006, and on British music channels on March 6.

The video has a simple concept. An alarm clock wakes up several different people. Kelly is on the radio station singing Walk Away live. Various people, including a man in the shower, a woman working at an office, a football player, and a man vacuuming his house, are all singing along. One man, played by Kelly's brother Jason, is discovered singing the song in a public restroom. As soon as he is found, he runs out in embarrasment. In his place, the man who found him begins singing along. Yet another man sings along in his car, becoming so involved in his performace that he eventually gets out of his car to dance, holding up traffic. Scenes of Kelly performing the song with a band are interspersed among these various scenes.

Chart performance

It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #97 on the chart dated January 21, 2006. The single premiered on the Canadian BDS Airplay charts on the January 28, 2006 charts at #100.

While "Walk Away" has already acheived top ten status on the Canadian charts, it has ascended more slowly than her previous singles on the US's Billboard Hot 100. In its twelfth week, "Walk Away" sits at #15 on that chart; by comparison, all the previous releases from "Breakaway" had already entered the top ten by this point. The single also performed disappointingly in the UK: the single had been expected to provide a large boost for Clarkson's album, but could only manage a number 21 debut.
