Sci. Am. vol. 116 p. 573 identifies Charles's parents and Henry and Mary Goodrich Van Hise, good evidence that it is a mistake to shorten William Henry Van Hise to William, and providing a norm suggesting that Mary's maiden name Goodrich be retained.
History of Dane County: Biographical and Genealogical, vol. 1 p. 925 explains that Henry "was a farmer in early life, but later became a merchant," important for an accurate perspective because Henry took up his mercantile career about 1865 when Charles was young (about 8); it also tells that Charles grew up with four sisters and two brothers.
