Chaparral High School is a public high school located in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States. Its mascot is the firebird, and the school colors are scarlet red and gold.[1]
Student body and academics
Chaparral High School has consistently ranked in Newsweek's list of Best High Schools in America, and in 2007 Chaparral was one of only 12 schools ranked in Arizona.[2] The high school holds the state record for having the most scholars in one year (24 in 2000).[3] Additionally, the school has also earned the record most in-state Presidential Scholars in Arizona, with 17 in 2003. [citation needed] Chaparral is the only school in Arizona to have students win the highest honors at the Siemens Westinghouse Competition and Intel Science Talent Search, two of the most prestigious science competitions in the U.S.[4]
Athletics
Baseball
The school's athletic program has historically been best known for its baseball program. The team has earned ten state championship titles, has made the final four of the state tournament 19 times, and has won 24 regional championship titles. In 2006, Chaparral was ranked in USA Today's Super 25 High School Baseball Team list.[5] Coach Jerry Dawson, who retired after the 2010 season, was one of three baseball coaches in school history. Coach Dawson was selected as the national "Coach of the Year" three times and had more than 700 victories to go along with 8 state championships.[6] Under Coach Dawson's tenure, over 140 young men have gone on to play at the college and/or professional levels.[7]
Coach Sam Messina helped Chaparral win a state championship in 2011.[8] Chaparral beat Brophy College Prep 5-3 on May 15th, 2012 for its tenth AZ state championship.
Football
In 2011, ESPN ranked Chaparral tenth in the nation for preseason high school football teams. The team has won six state championships, including back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000 with teams that went 28–0. The Firebirds won the state championship in 2002 with a 21–14 victory over Greenway High School. Under the tenure of head coach Charlie Ragle, Chaparral appeared in four straight state titles and won three of them. In 2008, Chaparral lost 38-0 in the 4A Division I state final to their rivals, Saguaro High School.
In 2009, the football program moved up a division to 5A-II, where it would dominate the next two seasons, winning back-to-back state championships over Marcos de Niza High School in 2009 and Peoria's Centennial High School in 2010. The 2010 team, which went undefeated, put on a dominating performance throughout the season with a stinging defense, and an offense that set a state record for points in a season with 727. In 2011, the team played in the Barry Sollenberger Kickoff Classic — which features top Arizona teams against top Nevada teams — in the same year, losing to Las Vegas's Bishop Gorman High School 42-22, but the team won a third state title — this time in the new Division II, over Cienega High School from Vail, Arizona.
After the 2011 season, Coach Ragle announced he was leaving to join Rich Rodriguez as an assistant at the University of Arizona.[9] He had a 63-7 record while at the school. Offensive coordinator Dave Huffine was promoted as his replacement.[10]
Badminton
Chaparral's Varsity badminton team is one of the most successful in the state of Arizona. Coach Carrie Davis has coached the team for over 30 years, leading the Firebirds to six state championship titles in 1994, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2010. In addition, under Coach Davis, the team placed second in the state three times and has won more than 18 Regional Championship titles since 1976.[11]
With their State Championship title win in 2004, Chaparral became the first 4A high school badminton team in Arizona to win a repeat state championship title. In 2005, the Firebirds beat their own record by winning a third straight state title, becoming the only 4A high school badminton team in Arizona to do so.
In fall 2010, the Firebirds badminton team won the state title against their rival, Xavier.
Lacrosse
Chaparral's men's club lacrosse team has won seven state championship titles, in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011 -- more than any other school in Arizona. The 2011 Championship was won under the direction of Coach PJ Rovinelli and his staff. Like the championship game that was played in 2009, Chaparral played against the defending champions, the Brophy Broncos, and the Firebirds won by the score of 10–9.
Softball
Chaparral's fastpitch softball team won the National Championship title in 1998, the Arizona state championship title in 1989, 1995, 1996, and 1997, and were state champion runner-ups in 1993, 1994, and 2007.[12]. Since 1997, eighteen women from Chaparral's softball team have gone on to play at the college level.
Golf
Chaparral's Men's Golf team has won seven state championship titles, in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Local 25 year PGA veteran and Arizona State University Hall of Famer, Howard Twitty is currently an assistant coach.
Wrestling
Chaparral has an ever growing wrestling program led by coach Terrence Tillet. The wrestling team started with 7 students its first year, but now has over 70. In 2011, there was only one state champion, Carlo Roman. He won freshman state in the 145 division. He is now varsity 138 and the team is hoping that he will win varsity state.
Cheerleading
Chaparral's Varsity Cheerleading squad, coached by Shelley Singer, won the National Cheerleading Championship title in in 2009 and 2010, and won the Arizona State Cheerleading Championship title in 2011. The cheerleading squad cheers for the football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's volleyball, track and field, and wrestling teams.[13]
Student activities
Arts
Chaparral has three concert choirs, a Mixed Jazz group (a co-ed group which performs jazz standards) and a Nothing But Treble group (an all-girls group). The school also features symphonic and concert orchestras, two concert bands, a marching band, jazz band, show choir, and various ensemble groups.
In 2009, the Chaparral Marching Band placed second in Division III at the ABODA State Marching Band Championships. In 2011, the marching band placed second in Division II of the Gilbert Marching Competition, qualifying them for the State Marching Festival.[14]. At the State Marching Festival, the marching band placed in the top 10 and received a "Superior" rating, scoring 92 out of 100 in General Effect. The drumline received an "Excellent" rating and "Outstanding" awards for Best Bass Drum Line and Best Front Ensemble (Pit). At the "Summerlin Spectacular" in Las Vegas, Nevada, the marching band won first place and was recognized for High Music Performance and High Visual Performance. To finish off the 2011-2012 season, the marching band placed sixth at the ABODA State Marching Band Championship.
In the 2011-2012 season, the jazz band placed first in the "Music in the Parks Festival" in Yorba Linda, California and was named Overall Best High School Jazz Band. At the same festival, the concert band received top honors, being named Best Concert Band.
Chaparral is home to Thespian Troupe #203, which performs two main-stage productions, a musical, and Student Productions each year. Chaparral is also home to the student run comedy improv troupe, Home IMPROVment, which has run for 6 seasons as of 2012 and hosts multiple shows each per year.
Robotics
Chaparral is home of the Firebird Robotics Team. Firebird robotics is part of the FIRST organization and their official team number is 3019. They are coached by Jeff Jordan and Claudia Ritiu.[15]
In 2009, Firebird Robotics won the Teacher of the Year Award at the Arizona Regional, which recognized Chaparral guidance counselor Chris Perry's work with the team. In 2011, again at the Arizona Regional, Firebird Robotics won the Hard-Hat Ward for Safety Presentation, recognizing their knowledge on safety protocol and procedure, and won the Entrepreneurship Award, recognizing a teach which has developed a comprehensive business plan in order to define, manage, and achieve team objectives. Firebird Robotics also attended the Vegas Regional, where they won the Website Award for excellence in student-designed, built, and managed FIRST team websites.[16]
