Sword Art Online is a 2012 sci-fi action anime based on the light novels written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by Abec. Set in the year 2022, a Virtual reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online (SAO) has just been released. In the game, players control their avatars just as they would with their real bodies using the Nerve Gear, a VR Helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain. However, on its first day out of the beta testing period, the players soon discover that they cannot log out. The creator of the game, Akihiko Kayaba, makes an appearance shortly after and issues them a challenge: if they wish to be free, they must reach the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. Should they die in the game, so would their bodies in the real world. As the players try to face their new deadly predicament, two skilled swordsmen, Kirito and Asuna, are determined to win and be free.

The anime is produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Ito with music by Yuki Kajiura, character design by Shingo Adachi and art direction by Takayuki Nagashima and Yusuke Takeda and sound direction by Yoshikazu Iwanami. The anime began airing on Tokyo MX, tvk, TVS, TVA, RKB, HBC, MBS and Chiba TV on July 8, 2012 and will also air on BS11 and AT-X at later dates.[1]

For episodes 1-14, the opening theme song is "Crossing Field" by LiSA[2] and the ending theme is "Yume Sekai" (ユメセカイ, lit. "Dream World") by Haruka Tomatsu.[3] From episode 15 onwards, the opening theme song is "INNOCENCE" by Aoi Eir and the ending theme song is "Overfly" by Haruna Luna. [4]
