Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (ドラゴンボールZ 神と神, Doragon Bôru Zetto Kami to Kami, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: God and God") is an upcoming Japanese anime action film that will be part of the Dragon Ball franchise. The film, directed by Masahiro Hosoda, will be released in Japan on March 30, 2013.[1][2]

The storyline will take place between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, directly after the death of Majin Buu.[3] The film will be an official part of the Dragon Ball storyline, and it is set between chapters 517 and 518 of the original manga, often referred to as the "lost decade" after the battle with Majin Buu.[4]

Synopsis

Bills, the God of Destruction tasked with maintaining some sort of balance in the universe, wakes up after a long sleep.[5] Hearing rumours of a Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza, Bills tracks down the warrior, Goku. Ecstatic over the new challenge, Goku ignores King Kai's advice and battles Bills, but is overwhelmed and defeated. Bills leaves, but Goku, knowing of the threat Bills presents to the universe, takes it upon himself and his friends to find a way to stop Bills before all is lost.[5]

Production

Manga creator Akira Toriyama has been "deeply involved" in the production of the film, along with Masahiro Hosoda (the episode director of Dragon Ball Z) and Yūsuke Watanabe.[6] Toriyama posted a brief comment on the official website saying:

"Actually, it's the first time I've been involved deeply in the production of animation and scriptwriting. I've forgotten many things because it had been a while, but as expected of the original author, I was soon able to get the tempo back. This movie will have the original atmosphere and a little bit of modern flavor, so I believe it will be a wonderful entertainment just like old times!"[7]

A movie trailer was previewed on July 2012 in Japan, along with a website.[8] Nearly one-quarter of the hits that reached the official page came from Japan, while the rest came from over 178 countries, particularly from the United States, Brazil, Mexico, France, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Spain, Canada, and the United Kingdom.[6]
