Rayman Legends is a platform game in development by Ubisoft Montpellier to be published by Ubisoft. It is the fifth main title in the Rayman series and the direct sequel to 2011's Rayman Origins. It was revealed in a leaked trailer that appeared on the internet on April 27, 2012.[3][4][5][6] It will be released exclusively for Wii U in North America on February 26, 2013,[7][8][9] in Europe on February 28, 2013,[1] and Australia and Japan in Spring 2013.[2]

Plot

Rayman, Globox, and the Teensies are off wandering through an enchanted forest when they discover a mysterious tent filled with a series of captivating paintings. As they look more closely, they notice each painting seems to tell the story of a mythical world. While focusing on a painting that shows a medieval land, they are suddenly sucked into the painting, entering the world, and the adventure begins. The gang must run, jump and fight their way through each world to save the day and discover the secrets of every legendary painting.

Gameplay

The game carries on the style of gameplay from Rayman Origins in which multiple players run, jump, punch, and kick their way through tricky levels. Lums can be collected by touching them, defeating enemies, or freeing captured Teensies. Along with Rayman, Globox, and the Teensies returning as playable characters, players can control a new female character Barbara.[10] With up to four players controlling the main characters, an additional player can control Murfy using the Wii U GamePad's touch screen. Murfy can perform various actions such as cutting through ropes, activating mechanisms, grabbing hold of enemies and assisting in gathering Lums. These offer a range of levels in which co-operation is required to progress, such as levels that mix platforming for Rayman and friends with rhythm gameplay for Murfy.[11]

In an interview with Nintendo Power, Ubisoft revealed that the majority of the single player campaign will be platforming with Rayman or one of the other characters, temporarily switching to Murfy during certain sections.[12]

Development

The game was first teased in an online marketing survey, which hinted that the upcoming "Rayman Origins 2" would include dragons, vampires, ghosts, the return of the Land of the Livid Dead and also someone dear to the Rayman series, in addition to returning features from its predecessor.[13] Subsequently, Ubisoft registered the domain names "RaymanLegends.com" and "Rayman-Legends.com."[14][15]

On April 27, 2012, the game's first trailer was leaked, revealing several details about it, including new playable characters, as well as the inclusion of online multiplayer and socialization. The end of the trailer also showcased Wii U exclusive features such as the use of NFC to make figures placed on the touchscreen appear on the game, as demonstrated with Rabbids and teased it with a figure of Ezio from Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft later released a statement that confirmed its development, though stated it was "intended as a purely internal demonstrative video, and in no way represents the final game, the final console or their features." [16][17][18][19]

The game was officially unveiled for the Wii U and demonstrated by Ubisoft at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012 trade show, Murfy (or Murphy) appeared as a playable character in the demo. Though Ubisoft has only confirmed the game's release on the Wii U, Ubisoft senior game manager Michael Micholic stated that Ubisoft is considering a PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of Rayman Legends as "we're looking at a lot of different launch options".[20] A trailer released at Gamescom 2012 revealed it would be exclusive to the Wii U.[9]

It was originally set to be released on November 30, 2012 (as a Wii U launch title). However, on October 8, 2012, it was reported to be delayed. The official release date is revealed to be February 26, 2013.[21]

On December 13, 2012, a demo of the game was released on the eShop.[22]

Pre-release reception

IGN and GameTrailers named the game Best Platformer of E3 2012.[23][24]
