"Red Lipstick"
Song

"Red Lipstick" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, from the deluxe edition of her sixth studio album, Talk That Talk (2011). The song was written by Terius Nash, Rihanna, Will Kennard and Saul Milton, with production helmed by Kennard and Milton under their stage name, Chase & Status. Critics compared "Red Lipstick" to various other artists because of its composition and style, including Metallica and Katy B. The song also received comparisons to Rihanna's fourth studio album Rated R (2009), due to the dark dubstep composition. Upon the release of Talk That Talk in the United Kingdom, "Red Lipstick" debuted at number 34 on the UK R&B Chart and number 85 on the South Korea Gaon International Chart.

Recording and production

"Red Lipstick" was written by Terius Nash, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Will Kennard, Saul Milton and Rihanna.[1] Production of the song was helmed by Kennard and Milton under their performing name Chase & Status.[1] Rihanna recorded the song at several recording studios around the world during her Loud Tour (2011),[2] including Festhalle Venue Dressing Room, Frankfurt, Germany and at The Park Hyatt Hotel, Room 341, Hamburg, Germany.[1] It was recorded by Kuk Harrell and Marcos Tovar.[1] Jennifer Rosales served as the assistant vocal recording to Harrel and Tovar.[1] "Red Lipstick" was mixed by Kevin "KD" Davis and assisted by Calvin Bailiff, at The Boom Boom Room, Los Angeles, California.[1] The song contains samples of "Wherever I May Roam", written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich under Creeping Death Music (ASCAP) and "Saxon", performed by Chase & Status with writing by Will Kennard and Saul Milton under Universal Music Publishing.[1] The original demo contained vocals from Nicki Minaj.

Before the release of the album credits, Andrew Unterberger of Popdust had compared "Red Lipstick" to Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam" (Metallica, 1991) as Unterberger noted that the song's opening synths are reminiscent to the riffs at the start of "Wherever I May Roam".[4] It is a dubstep song.[5] The song is one of only a few included on Talk That Talk to feature overt suggestive lyrics, including "do you right here while the whole world watching."[4] During the chorus, Rihanna chants "Let me grab my tit while you sit on top" with an aggressive tone.[6] Lyrically, "Red Lipstick" is a song about drugs and the pressure of being a celebrity, pondering the thoughts about "where the private ends and the public begins."[7]

The song received generally positive reviews from music critics. Michael Cragg of The Guardian wrote that "Red Lipstick" was reminiscent of songs featured on Rihanna's fourth studio album Rated R (2009), with specific comparisons to "G4L" and "Wait Your Turn".[6] Priya Elan of NME wrote that "Red Lipstick" sounded like a cut from a Katy B album,[3] an English singer-songwriter whose music draws heavily from dubstep, R&B and house genres.[8]
