Is it possible to use the Citation bot on other Wikimedia projects such as Wikiversity? Using the manual interface, I have been able to direct the bot to the correkt Wikiversity page, but it just puts out the original page with "No changes required". (The page I'm trying to edit is [[Wikiversity:User:Hweimer/Quantum_Simulation/Exact_diagonalization]].) [[User:Hweimer|Hweimer]] ([[User talk:Hweimer|talk]]) 15:21, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Other language Wikis

Can the DOI bot be used on other language wikipedias too? GoEThe (talk) 08:00, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I won't have time to do this in the forseeable future. If anybody wants to have a go, question me and I'll let you know how you can do so. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 18:21, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I would like to have a go at this. In de-WP, I have now implemented a BibPMID template which includes the existing but unused BibRecord template which itself uses Literatur (not cite). The only thing needed would be the bot to create the data. What's more, we need not start from scratch, like you, we could 1. import your PMID database, 2. convert as much references as possible to use it, and only then bother about a bot. Do you agree? --Ayacop (talk) 14:06, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Might be able to look into this soon. Should be much easier now than in 2008. Things that I will need from you:
  • An approved bot account on de wikipedia
  • A list of translations required, i.e. the current text in en and the required text in de.
Cheers, Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 17:12, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bot flag is requested. Please note we use Literatur, not cite, so data has a different format. --ZitterBot (talk) 08:49, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great stuff. Presumably the template employs the same parameters under different names? If this is correct, then all I'll need is a translation of each parameter name under 'cite journal'. Does the de wiki also have a hoarde of 'cite book', 'citation', and other related templates – or are they living in the nirvana of a single 'Literatur' template? Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 13:45, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Book is Literatur, yes. For journals, either Literatur or a (different from yours) version of cite journal can be used. Part of the people still work without formatting template. I'll mail you further details. --Ayacop (talk) 17:26, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HI, I'm trying to implement the citation bot in another wiki. I cannot figure that out from the info provided and I'm not sure what to do with the files gotten via SVN. Can anybody help? Cheers, --Nhslzt (talk) 09:15, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Widget freezing?

Hi, I installed the widget. What supposed to happen after you use the "reference formatting" tools in the bottom left hand corner? After I clicked on "Automatic (fast)", the page went to a new address (is it ok to post the URL? per monobook concerns etc) with just a white screen. It says "done" in the bottom left hand corner, I've retried it a couple of times, have left it about 10 minutes now, how long is it supposed to take? Cheers, Ryan4314 (talk) 10:21, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The bot's offline for a little while; normal service will resume soon. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 16:21, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok cheers, is there anywhere I can "watch" that might post a notice when it's up again please? Ryan4314 (talk) 22:28, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's back online now. Enjoy! Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 23:28, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This fixes incorrectly typed citations?

Or does it do something different? 24.184.206.83 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Yes. Among other things, it adds missing DOIs, makes sure they are correctly formatted, corrects misspelled parameters in the {{cite journal}}: Empty citation (help) template, and adds title, journal, page number, etc. information. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 17:39, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, thanks. 24.184.206.83 (talk) 02:20, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Manual mode?

Ugh. Just tried the bot, and while the job it did was great (kudos), I really really dislike tools that make automated edits (and to add insult to injury, doesn't really make it clear that that's what will happen). Any chance of a fully manual mode—ideally dropping me into a preview of the page with the bot's edits, but good enough if it just gives me the modified wikicode of the page for manual cut&paste—to supplement the automatic modes? I'd say the manual mode should be the default, so long as I have to option to choose the manual mode I'll be a happy camper. In any case, great work on what looks to be a really useful tool! --Xover (talk) 13:42, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would certainly be possible. However, the edits which the bot suggests will be made automatically when the bot next visits the page on its routine duties anyway, so I'm not sure what would be obtained. If the bot is making edits which are undesirable, then the optimal solution is for them to be reported here so I can recode the bot and avoid the errors. If you still think that there is a benefit to your suggestion, do spell it out and persuade me! Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 14:17, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think a more useful manual mode would be very useful especially since the bot seems to attract a lot of people that just want to block it. if the manual mode was more useful, it would be easier to use the bot even if it was blocked.  —Chris Capoccia TC 13:13, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note that the bot can now be activated via a gadget at Special:Preferences#preftab-9; see 'Citation expander' under 'Editing gadgets'. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 13:42, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

widget doesn't work with beta

the widget doesn't work for me if i'm in beta. once i click leave beta, it goes back to working.  —Chris Capoccia TC 12:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

now beta has been finalized and pushed out. i can't see the widget links anymore at all.  —Chris Capoccia TC 08:25, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The new skin is called "Vector.cs"; you will need to add the widget to that skin instead of the previous "monobook.cs". Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 14:13, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

Hi, I like the idea that the tool makes one central wiki-wide template for each citation. What would be very useful if there were a central page for every single citation where users could add comments and that would also have a discussion page, mainly for the purpose for discussing the quality of the reference, linking it with other references or material that people consider related and simply getting a quick and easy overview in which contexts a certain citation is used.

If there is a better place to ask for this please let me know, as this touches both policy as well as technical aspects I was not really sure where to ask first.Richiez (talk) 13:06, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You could try the talk page of the reference citation? Click the edit link by the reference, then choose the talk tab. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 14:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Flags 2 different refs in same volume of journal as duplicates

In article Biofilm this bot has added DUPLICATE DATA: doi=10.1038/nrmicro821 in "cite journal" to two different articles by different authors in the same journal volume (same doi). I would say that this addition is confusing and not a good idea, although it doesn't affect the visible text of the article. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Biofilm&diff=370181554&oldid=370074901

Possibly there is a better way of entering such references without duplication of the doi, in which case maybe the flag is correct and I need to learn something. The "rp" template (which allows a single reference number in the text, with different page numbers) isn't appropriate as the articles have different titles and authors.

Is it always this slow?

I hit "submit" and the page freezes for several minutes (Waiting for toolserver.org...) and then loads a new page which is blank. I leave it for twenty minutes and still nothing. Is this normal behavior? ~Adjwilley (talk) 20:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Have it put in a least two columns for refs?

I would like to see the bot replace {{reflist}} with {{reflist|2}} if there is at least, say, three refs in an article. There probably is no guideline on it but two columns or more for refs is done by convention. Maybe it can be an option for individual editors? -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 22:16, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Search for references/citations

Can this bot search the Internet, find new references, and place them on the appropriate pages with the appropriate code? Allen (talk) 19:56, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bot deleting reference

Hi, I'm engaged in an edit war with this bot, as it keeps on deleting my reference. Is there anyway I can stop the bot from altering my reference, or do you know why it might be deleting it? The ref in question is: Coppins A.M. & Coppins B.J. (2003). Atlantic Hazelwoods - a neglected habitat?, Botanical Journal of Scotland, 55, 149-160. Thanks, KatherineGrundy (talk) 18:02, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

issue partly resolved: I have denied the bot access to the page using bots|deny=Citation bot KatherineGrundy (talk) 19:50, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
