It is the sole international airport in Nepal. Before the massacre of the Nepalese royal family, Nepal enjoyed substantial air traffic, being served by many international airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Lauda Air (a subsidiary of Austrian Airlines) and Lufthansa (until 1997).
