The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education (PUPCOED, PUPEduc, formerly the College of Office Administration and Business Teacher Education) is the normal school of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, a state university in Manila, Philippines. It is the oldest college of the university. The college is situated on the third floor of the main building limited to the east, north and south wings.

History

As it was founded in 1904, Manila Business School became the training ground of students for either government service or entrepreneurship. MBS offered courses in typing, bookkeeping, stenography, and telegraphy in addition to the prescribed intermediate curriculum.

When MBS was renamed Philippine School of Commerce (PSC) in 1908, a secondary course was added to the existing courses, and a one-year post-secondary course in stenography was offered in 1912.

In 1933, PSC was merged with the Philippine Normal School and Philippine School of Arts and Trades. Under the direct supervision and administration of the PNS, PSC replaced its secondary curriculum in 1935 with a two-year junior college curriculum, the Associate in Commercial Science (ACS).

As PSC became the Philippine College of Commerce (PCC) in 1952, it organized its teacher training department and offered a four-year program in business education besides offering secretarial, bookkeeping, and entrepeneurship curricula. In that year, the Bachelor of Science in Business Education (BSBE) program received a plaque of distinction for "bold and successful pioneering in vocational and business education" from the Philippine Educational System. In 1955, the Business Writers Association of the Philippines conferred on PCC the title of "Business College of the Year" for its dynamic leadership in business education and office administration.

In 1978, PCC was converted into a chartered state university and renamed Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) causing the merger of the Secretarial Studies Department and the Business Teacher Education Department and was named Faculty of Secretarial and Business Education (FSBE). FSBE was renamed College of Secretarial and Business Education (CSBE) in 1983; and in 1986, the name was again changed to College of Office Administration and Business Teacher Education (COABTE).

On November 22, 2009, COABTE was renamed College of Education (CoEd) to respond to the increasing demand for qualified graduates who can teach at the elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels. As a result of the change of name, the Department of Office Administration has become a part of the College of Business Administration.

In 2013, the University Board of Regents approved Dr. De Guzman's Reorganizational Plan. Under the approved structure, the Bachelor in Library and Information Science program will be transferred from College of Arts to College of Education and the masteral and doctoral programs in education from Graduate School will be transferred to the college. The college also started offering a baccaularaute program in Special Education .

Degree Programs

The college has two basic education units: the Future Business Teacher Organization's Community Outreach Learning Center and the Laboratory High School. Both schools serve as training grounds for Business Teacher Education students.

The college offers a broad spectrum of baccaulaureate programs: Bachelor in Business Teacher Education (with majors in Business Technology & Livehood Education, and Information Technology Education) Bachelor in Elementary Education, Bachelor in Library and Information Science, Bachelor in Secondary Education (with majors in English, Mathematics, Filipino, and Social Studies) and Bachelor in Special Education. It has also continued to offer a Postbaccalaureate Program for non-Education graduates to prepare them for a teaching career.

The college also offers master's and doctor's degrees for professionals. Master's programs offered by the College are: Master in Arts in Teaching (with majors in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Science), Master in Business Education, Master in Educational Management and Master in Library and Information Science. Alongside the master's programs, the college also offers a doctoral degree in Educational Management.

Junior and Senior High School

Laboratory High School's junior and senior high school programs help students make informed, intelligent decisions about their future, and fosters skills that will be highly useful in the business world. With a range of different programs, PUPLHS teaches about concepts relating to entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness. The volunteers bring real-life business experience and guidance into the classroom at a time that represents an essential crossroads for young people.

Bachelor in Business Teacher Education

The Bachelor in Business Teacher in Education (BBTE) is a four-year degree program with two specializations: Business Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLE), and Information Technology Education (ITE). Both specializations prepare students to teach specific courses effectively across the learning areas in elementary, secondary, college, and vocational/technical schools. The program also prepares students for entry into and advancement in jobs within any business office.

Bachelor in Elementary Education and Bachelor in Secondary Education

The Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED) and Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSEd) are four-year degree programs that focus on preparing students to become exceptional elementary and secondary educators in the areas of literacy, mathematics, social studies, and science and to create classroom environments that stimulate young learners’ curiosity and engage their intellects in ways that directly foster high achievement. The principles of diversity, democracy, authenticity, academic rigor, and accountability are integrated into the professional foundation and elementary education pedagogy courses.

Bachelor in Special Education

The Special Education program teaches the content knowledge and effective teaching skills to become a special education instructor for students with mild to moderate disabilities. This degree is a cross-categorical model for initial certification. The students will become highly qualified educators prepared to make a difference with those who need it most.

Bachelor in Library and Information Science

This four-year program provides students with opportunities for developing appropriate knowledge, skills, values and attitudes for effective library service. Competencies emphasized include the integration of information technology and management information system for better organization and use of library resources.

Post Baccalaureate in Teacher Education

A one (1) year Postbaccalaureate in Teacher Education (PBTE) is offered to holders of nonteaching degrees. It is designed to enhance the teaching skills of those already teaching and those who are yet to teach. The units earned in education also qualify the student to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and to meet the requirements for the continuing Professional Education Program of the Professional Regulation Commission.

Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching program is geared towards experienced K-12 teachers looking to take their teaching careers to the next level. The program is designed to help you acquire a broader perspective by reflecting on current practices, learning new methods, and implementing findings directly in a classroom. This unique blend of theory and practice will help you develop the skills and confidence you need to become a transformative teacher. The college offers the Master of Arts in Teaching with majors in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Science.

Master in Business Education

The Master in Business Education (MBE) program is intended for business teachers and other educators who will assume leadership in curriculum and instruction in schools and other work force education settings and in processes that change business education. The program develops teacher leaders who demonstrate reflective thought and scholarship within the context of a culturally diverse society.

Master in Educational Management

The Master in Educational Management (MEM) degree program is designed to prepare educators to become effective administrators of educational institutions by providing them with management and human relations skills to implement the mission, goals, and objectives of their school.

Master in Library and Information Science

The Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) program is designed to prepare qualified men and women for professional positions in various types of libraries and information centers. The MLIS degree is extremely flexible and demand is great for graduates with every academic background. The program is dedicated to providing a quality MLIS degree to students in any part of the country. This commitment allows the student to take advantage of courses offered at many sites via different delivery systems and schedules built around the adult learners. A technology-mediated educational delivery is a distinct feature of the program.

Doctor in Educational Management

The Doctor in Educational Management (DEM) is an academic, research degree designed especially for school administrators at all levels of education, education specialists, and educators serving at the tertiary level. The program emphasizes high standards and advanced levels of academic challenge in pursuit of quality and excellence in education. It incorporates a research orientation for effective decision making, enabling them to become positive change agents in the attainment of national and international goals.

Student Life

The College of Education Student Council is the official governing student body and acts as the regulatory body for all student organizations. It approves the registration and oversees implementation of school activities. The Student Central Organization holds student activities and competition such as Acquaintance Night, seminars and others.

The school's alumni association, the College of Education Alumini Association oversees various activities such as class reunions, local gatherings, and scholarships. Alumni batches help their alma mater by donating goods and providing scholarships.

Organizations

Students may join a variety of organizations which pioneer the skills of the students. Student organizations organize school activities instead of faculty to hone their skills. Each bachelor program has its own society. There are two major societies in the College: the Future Business Teachers’ Organization and the Bachelor in Elementary and Secondary Teaching Society.

Aside from the major societies, the college also has Interest-based organizations. There are six Interest-based organizations: DESEd Glee Club, Information Technology Club, KATNAM Social Studies Club, The Limestone (Official College Student Publication), MDAS (Mathematics Club), and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Club.

Performing Arts

The PUPLHS Chorale is one of the chorale groups in the university, alongside PUP Bagong Himig. Since its organization in 2003, it has won several awards from different local, national and international choir competitions, including the grand prize in the Philippine Travel Mart Eco Chorale Competition High School Division last September 5, 2010; Gold diploma and 2nd prize in the 1st Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition held in Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam last March 14, 2011 for the Mixed Youth Choir category; and the grand prize in the 4th Voyage of Songs International Chorale Festival held in Penang, Malaysia last July 4-8, 2009, among others.

The Banda Kawayan is a bamboo orchestra organized in 1973. It regularly performs during school programs and also for diplomats and tourists in various functions in the Malacañang Palace, the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and other public and private institutions.

Athletics

The college participates in the University Intramurals which are held in line with the University Foundation Anniversary Week. CoEd, together with the College of Human Kinectics in Education Cluster, yearly grabs several awards including the Over-all Champion award.

Aside from the University Intramurals, the college also holds intramural events for major sports in their College Week.

Affiliations

The college is affiliated with professional organizations with help the college hone their students and faculty. Most of the faculty serves these organizations as officials. The college is member of the following organizations: Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, Global Peace Foundation (GPF), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Philippine Association for Business Education (PAFBE), Philippine Association for Teacher Education (PAFTE), Philippine Association of Educators in Office Administration Foundation, Inc. (PAEOAFI), Philippine Association of Graduate Education (PAGE), Philippine Association of Research Managers (PHILARM), Philippine Council of Deans and Educators in Business (PCDEB), Philippine State Universities and Colleges Computer Education and Systems Society (PSUCCESS), Philippine Teachers’ Association for the Research of Principles (PTARP) and State Universities and Colleges Teachers Association (SUCTEA).
