More than 70% of villagers have one or more family members serving in Defence Forces at different ranks. Hav/Instr Vinay Kumar (AEC), Sujan Singh Surinder Singh (SM) are these few distinguished indls in Armd forces.

Mukerian is a city and a municipal council in Hoshiarpur district in the Indian state of Punjab.

Geography

Mukerian is located at 31°57′N 75°37′E / 31.95°N 75.62°E / 31.95; 75.62.[1] It has an average elevation of 245 metres (803 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Mukerian city had a population of 21379. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mukerian has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 74%. In Mukerian, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is an industrial hub.

Mukerian is the city for about 150 villages around it. Located on NH-1A, Mukerian is a very harmonious community where people mostly belong to different sects of Sikh and Hindu religion. Youngsters get very good education and Mukerians are spread throughout the world. There is a very famous Sikh Gurudwara that was earlier the Fort of Maharaj Ranjit Singh's in-laws known as "Qila Atallgarh".

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture and are serving in Indian Defense forces in several capacities. Mukerian is a permanent base of the Indian Armed forces and its south part hosts Uchi Bassi cantonment. Region hosts majority of military exercises and war games of Indian army.

Mukerian falls under Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. Many famous leaders are associated with Mukerian. The late Dr Kewal Krishan, former Speaker in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, was from Mukerian. The cabinet minister, Mr Rajnish Kumar Babbi, is Mukerian's current representative(MLA) in Punjab Legislative Assembly. The current President of the Municipal Committee of Mukerian is komi jain. Manglesh Kumar (Judge) was one of the former Presidents. Er. Rohit Sharma is one of the famous social worker in city. He is struggling for public library, stadium and Govt. college in city. He is also raising his voice for Hindu Sikh unity and their rights.

Education

Several schools exist in Mukerian.

Mukerian is renowned for the education system all around the area and the Institution making the honour of the city for good education are SPN College and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Educational Trust. SGGSE Trust has many education institution in the town. Dasmesh Public School and Dasmesh Girls College are the institution by Sri Guru Gobind Sing Educational Trust.

AASHADEEP GROUP OF EDUCATIONS:- Is the best institute for middle-class families, They serve quality education in affordable fee. Army School in Unchi Bassi ( Mukerian cantt.) is one of the early English medium schools in the district and before the turn of new century was major hub for kids from families in the neighbouring areas. Now there are many good schools in close vicinity of Mukerian, St. Joseph's Convent School (ICSE) and Dashmesh Public School(CBSE) being at forefront of them, Dashmesh Public School is under management of SGPC and both schools are situated 3 km from Mukerian in a village named Chack Alla Baksh.

St Augustine School (ICSE affiliated day boarding institute about 6 km from Mukerian) is known for providing a high standard of education and bringing its students to national and international level. This institution has been highly ranked. Victoria International School is one of the most famous schools in Mukerian.

Anglo Sanskrit School was founded in 1914 by a philanthropist of the area, Hakim Sh. Ram Sharan Ji Dass. The institution ison the Mukerian-Talwara road, 500 metres from national highway( NH-1) & 1 km from Mukerian Railway station. The institution provides education to about 2000 students from First Primary up to Twelfth Class. It is a recognised, Government aided institution. Ex-Minister Late Sh. B.N. Makkar, Ex-F.M & Ex-Speaker of Punjab Late Dr. Kewal Krishan have been students of this institution whiach has also produced Doctors and Engineers. The School has been renovated by its NRI alumni Hon'ble Dr. Krishan Kant Joshi & his family. The school provides education in Humanities & Science subjects. Mandeep Singh Student of Tenth Class stood First in Punjab in 2003 and Miss Nitu Uppal Stood First in Punjab in 10+2 class Non-Medical in 2005. Recently three students of this School were admitted in M.B.B.S. & many more selected in Engineering, Army, Navy, Air Force B.D.S, Police & other fields. There are also two degree colleges in the city - S.P.N College and Dashmesh Girls' College. Late Brig. Mehar Singh (retd) a patriot from Mukerian have been the chairperson of S.P.N College of nursing,(For ANM & GNM & B.Sc. Nursing and For PG) affiliated to Baba Farid University is a well known college with good hostel facility. Muhammad Sharif Chaudhry S/O Chaudhry Rahimullah was born in Fattuwal in 1922. He was orphaned early, at the age of 8 and brought up by his eldest brother Chaudhry Nazir who was a headmaster of the local village school. Sharif went on to study agriculture at Agricultural College, Lyallpur. In 1956 he received the Ford Foundation scholarship to enter the Agricultural Economics graduate program at Cornell University, USA. Upon his return to Pakistan in 1958, he joined th Pakistan Academy for Rural Development as a founder member. In 1967 he received another scholarship to do his PhD in Agricultural Economics at Washington State University, USA. He has served in Libya as a professor of agricultural economics at University of Tripoli, and later as a consultant to the Libyan Agricultural Research Buereau. He retired from the US AID program in 1988. HIs lifelong ambition was to return to his home village of Fattuwal which did not materialize. He died in 1998.

Points of interest

Mukerian Hydel Project is one of the biggest irrigation projects in India. The Pong Dam across river Beas is about 35 km from Mukerian. Mukerian is located on National Highway 1A and about 450 km north of New Delhi. Mukerian City is a junction for Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Talwara and Jalandhar by road.

A "miraculous" famous Lord Shiva temple is in the village of Kathgarh/Mirthal, about 20 km from Mukerian city. There is a natural Shiva ling in the temple. Shiva-Parbati "PINDIES" (the holy stone) get apart in summer & get attached in the winter season. Thousands of devotees come here for worship and prayer. Another famous temple is in the village of Dagan near Mukerian.

A very old temple of lord shiva is situated outside the village puro nagal barota. . Named "dera baba mastgir g."

Economy

Mukerian has some 30 rice mills (including Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice and General Mills and Ohri Rice Mills) from which almost all the rice is exported to the Middle East and Europe. It is also a main market for the surrounding area. Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice & Gen (CEE EMM RICE MILL) and Ganpati rice mill, a well known rice mill established at Mukerian City. Panjdhera Rice Mill has recently started its operation at nearby village Panjdhera.

The sugar mill at the south of the city is one of the biggest sugar mills in Punjab. Mukerian paper ltd. is the industry and distillery is the major employer in the region.

The one and only one Flour Mill in Mukerian is near village budhewal.

Budhabarh, near the river Beas, is one of the largest villages of Punjab, Budhabarh is a Rajput village 18 km from Mukerian City, at the boarder of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. It is a village of gardens. Every summer litchies, mangoes and alutcha are exported to different cities of India and all over the world.

Ramgarh Kullian is located at 31°07′N 76°29′E / 31.95°N 75.62°E. It has an average elevation of 245.1 metres (806.1 feet).

"Panjdhera Kallan" is located along with the Unchi Bassi Canal . One out of all families in the village is settled in UK, US, Canada, Australia, etc. This village has shower of GOD by DHAN DHAN BABA KARAM SINGH JI GERRE WALE. The BHAJANGARH Gurdwara is located near this village is a source of divine and peace.

Puro Nagal Barota Its distance from Mukerian is about 8 km. Its situated on a road, which joint NH 1A to dasuha hajipur road. All religion peoples are leaving here. "DERA BABA MAST GIR G" most famous temple in this village. And a gurudawara, pir the majahar, krishan temple, ravidas mandir also here.
