Twynham School (formerly known as Twynham Comprehensive School) is a secondary school in Christchurch, Dorset, England, which has approximately 1,500 students covering years 7 to 13 (ages 11 to 18). It has Leading Edge, Training School, Technology College, music college and Academy status. The school is about 0.5 km (0.3 miles) from the town centre. The headteacher is Terry Fish.

School history

The school opened in 1930 as a senior school, then becoming a secondary modern school and finally a comprehensive in 1969. The school doubled in size during the 1990s and is one of the largest schools in Dorset.[citation needed] In May 2011 Twynham converted into an academy.

ICT at Twynham

Twynham has nine computer rooms, most of which have Windows 7 PCs, two room which have iMacs used mainly for music, and six sets of netbook PCs.

The school offers two different courses to take at GCSE level. These are:

  • Computing (Software Development (mainly in Visual Basic))
  • ICT (Similar to the previous ECDL)

Facilities

Twynham School has 11 science labs. All labs are equipped with sinks, gas taps, and science equipment. The technology block has two cookery rooms, one textiles room, three resistant material rooms and one graphics room, in addition to an IT room. Every student has to take a technology subject a GCSE level. During year seven and eight students get to rotate around all of the technology subjects building up to them choosing on two subjects to take in year nine. For GCSE (Years 10 and 11) students study only one subject from the technology faculty.

Extra curricular activities

There are many extra curricular activities including sports, music and drama.
