The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

They look great! Many thanks. Just wondering though if you could possibly brighten up the first three portraits as they look a little too dark. TRAJAN 117 (talk) 21:04, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I brightened the first three as much as I dared already. The problem is that these three all appear to be quite dark paintings to start with and "brightening" them only makes them look washed out and unnatural. Centpacrr (talk) 22:17, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request higher resolution upload

I would like this photo to become a Featured Picture because of its encyclopedic value, the bravery and ingenuity of the man, and the expression on his face. However, I need a much higher pixel upload. I know this is a little more work than just photo manipulation, but what I am asking for is to find/upload a larger version (I don't know how to do that). We can then take it through FP (you would get the credit for all the work).

TCO (talk) 16:32, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As there does not seem to be any high resolution versions of this particular image available on line that I have been able to find, I have made a large (3,111 × 4,400, 200dpi, 2.52 MB) "Hi Res" study of this image using PhotoZoomPro5 and Photoshop which I have also slightly sepia toned (see above) for you to consider. If you like it I can upload it to the Commons page. If you would like the sepia toning removed let me know and I can do that too. It's not perfect because the image I started with is relatively small but it may meet your needs for a larger image. Whatever you decide is fine. Centpacrr (talk) 18:41, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's good work and we can add it to Fluorine (it seems to have better contrast or something). I would not overwrite the Commons image since there is so much usage in other languages. For FP, I really think we need to get a better scan or something. They are awful fussy there and will say you cheated if we just blow up an old image in size. [I think.] TCO (talk) 21:09, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A higher resolution scan is certainly preferable but there does not appear to be one anywhere on line. I'm afraid that this is this about the best that can be done with what's available. Centpacrr (talk) 21:56, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What if we just grab a publication and scan it? Or do we need the negative? (Eh...screw it, will add to FP. See what happens.)TCO (talk) 23:25, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Scanning from a printed publication (assuming you could find one) would probably not help much because the image would probably be a halftone and not very large. Not enough detail there to make it better. The best would be a true photographic print. A negative would not be needed for that (to scan from), and since there is only one original negative and who knows where it is, that's not practical either.
