Growl has been downloaded over 20000 times from [Version Tracker], so surely that satisfies the 'criteria' for software?

Yup. I´m sure. It´s a quasistandard in the mac world...

Growl is an offshoot of the Adium project. There used to be an Adium plugin... I think it was called the event bezel plugin. Anyhow, Growl was created to be much more robust than this plugin. (There should be old discussion on the Cocoaforge forums, and probably in the svn commit logs).

Applications screenshot

The screenshot of the applications part is now out of date as of today (the Growl 1.1 release) - it's been redesigned. If anyone gets a chance it'd would be nice if that screen was updated or replaced. SeanMooney 18:18, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Practical Advantages?

AS the vast majority of the apps that are compatible with Growl have their own notifications, I'd like to see some info in the article about the practical advantages of Growl. Is it in actual fact just a fancy toy? Centrepull (talk) 08:07, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

On OS X 10.8+ the end user can choose to use a Growl notification or the OS X Notation Center fro notifations (if the developer has used the framework right (add a link from Growl about it))

Multiple Issues

I flagged this article with multiple issues, because:

Tone: Article looks like it was written from a non-authoritative source who appear to be unclear about their knowledge of the subject.
Confusing and Unclear: This article appears to make the Growl software appear as if it might be malware, and describes very technical details about the inner workings of Growl without clearly describing what it does.
No Lead Section: Somebody needs to write a neutral introduction to describe what Growl actually is and does in a single paragraph.
Neutral point of view: It appears as if some of this article was written by someone who has a complaint about Growl, particularly the following paragraph:
- The application appears to be non-malicious; however users^[who?] may not even know growl was installed until an update is requested.^{[citation needed]} While damage to a user's system is not immediately apparent after accidental installation, the program may reappear without warning, suggesting uninstall techniques on the manufacturer's website are ineffectual.^{[dubious – discuss]}
- (This complaint needs to be neutralized, and should be combined with the Adobe CS5 issue in its own section with citations.)
No Sources: Even though there are a few sources around the article, the major portion of the article cites no sources or references. If anyone has a reference to verify this information (either on the Growl website or a forum somewhere around the web) please add them in.
