Motionloft is a real-time analytics tool that utilizes sensor technology which provides real-time and historical pedestrian and vehicle data.[1] The use of their technology is currently concentrated towards the real estate industry.

The company was founded in 2010 by it's CEO Jon Mills in San Francisco. The concept was derived from an effort to analyze how many customers entered retail stores on a daily basis[2]. Notable investors include Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Napster co-founder Shawn Fanning.[3]

Motionloft obtains traffic data by using a 5" x 5" 11 watt sensor system which is generally installed on the storefront of a building. The sensors measure the amount of people who walk, drive by or enter a building.[2] The sensors send real-time data back to it's servers and does not capture video or imagery.[4] This technology is viewed as a significant upgrade over the traditional means of collecting similar data which generally consisted of hiring a person to stand in a location and count the number of people and/or vehicles that pass by. Some metrics that the that are provided by Motionloft are the number of pedestrians per blocks per hour and up-to-the-minute data on a location's activity. This data is seen as particularly useful for retailers as it can provide insight towards where to locate, staffing schedules and hours of operation. The company has also recently partnered with the city of San Francisco to collect data for social-service needs such as public transportation and emergency response.[5]

Motionloft customers have included real estate firms Cushman & Wakefield and Colliers International, as well as retail companies Saks Fifth Avenue and CVS Pharmacy.[5]
