Article declined for creation

Hi Matthew first i would like to thank you specially for your time and effort. With regard to the comment you posted on my article "Okay, this is a step forward, but we need sources inserted as WP:Footnotes. It should be explicit to the reader which sources verify which statements. So please review WP:Footnotes and apply them to the main body of your article. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:59, 17 September 2013" .I think I have improved the article with suggestions you have given me..Would like you to review when ever you get time and send me feed backs. Also I would like to delete my old revisions if you can guide me.Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astrangers heart (talkcontribs)

I NEED HELP WITH THE ARTICLE: Marie-Jo THIEL — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mic EROHUBIE (talkcontribs) 12:51, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly do you need help with? Saying "I NEED HELP" is not a very helpful way to ask. Have you noticed, looking at the page, how incredibly cluttered all the text is? Did you just copy-paste it from somewhere and not bother trying to fix the formatting to make it appear correctly on Wikipedia. From what I can tell, you have a broken WP:Infobox (the text box at right of a bio that has basic statistics of a person), and also some of your text appears in a gray box that stretches way across the screen; that problem appears because you're leaving blank space at the start of a line, so do not indent paragraphs on Wikipedia. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:06, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

you are right mathew, i wrote the article in word, then copied and pasted it.I have being reading a lot of things on how to properly format an article specifically for Wikipeadia. there seems to me to be too much information...Is there a template somewhere that i can use to get this article correctly formatted? Mic EROHUBIE — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mic EROHUBIE (talkcontribs) 15:49, 27 December 2013 (UTC) Thanks a lot Mathew, I have tried working on the article (Marie-Jo THIEL) following your advice and I like the improvements that I see. However, I still need help with inserting the references. My word skills didn't help me much here. --Mic EROHUBIE (talk) 14:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Citations/References Added

Matthew,

Thanks again for all your guidance. I've added some links to news coverage and third-party opinions that I think will lend some additional credibility to Ray Ricker's page. I also listed several of his former students who have Wikipedia pages of their own. Please let me know if you think this draft meets Wiki specs:

Hello, I'll leave it for others to do the next review, but taking a glance I don't think you're yet getting the thrust of WP:Notability. Again, the point is not "tell us why you think this person matters", the point is "demonstrate how other people have found him important by providing citations to published works where people have found suit to discuss Ricker and his career". That's why the footnotes to his students' sites aren't helpful: unless the site specifically says "Ricker had an influence on me and here's how" than the footnote to the cite really isn't relevant. What would be relevant is if somebody else like an academic or journalist saw fit to discuss Ricker's influence on X, Y, and Z students. Also there's no reason to footnote his own thesis: nobody's doubting he has a thesis, just mention it in the article itself with enough details (publisher, date, serial# if applicable) so a reader could find it if they wanted. Linking to WorldCat doesn't do anything to strengthen that since simply being on WorldCat is not an endorsement. That said, the several news articles you have on music business look to be good support, so that's something. Are there just no articles out there in jazz academic journals or whatever that discuss Ricker's career? Did you not find the passage in an academic book I suggested to you to be citeable? MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:47, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew - I've added a link to review of a performance by one of his students, which includes a reference to Ricker as a "jazz legend": "After receiving bachelor’s and masters of music degrees from Eastman School of Music, a division of University of Rochester, he worked with jazz legends such as Fred Sturm, Bill Dobbins and Ramon Ricker."

I've also added a list of some of the artists Ricker has recorded/performed with: Stan Getz, Buddy Rich, Chuck Mangione, Steely Dan, the Moody Blues.

Dudley W. Dudley article

Hi Matthew, Thank you for reviewing my article and getting back to me. I will look at these two sources you have sent. In regards to the references, I am knew to Wikipedia and I don't know how to eliminate the footnotes at the bottom that have no text beside them. More soon. Matthew- Thank you so much for your guidance, I have solved the problem! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julia.Rose.19 (talkcontribs) 16:55, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Julia.Rose.19, great to hear! BTW, feel free to remove any of my comments on what to fix, once you've fixed the issue. Reviews are running behind a week or two, but if you have a yellow box on the page that means you're in line. I'm on and off Wikipedia these days, but if you get it "done" to your liking, have added in some citations to published books for additional strength, etc. feel free to ping me here to ask for a quick review, but don't wait on me since I may be out. MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:03, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great Matthew. I will delete your comments and add the books now. Is there any way we can publish the article today? Dudley's husband is in the hospital and may pass away, he would like to see the article. I know you're busy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julia.Rose.19 (talkcontribs) 17:10, 18 December 2013 (UTC) Julia.Rose.19 (talk) 17:27, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I should be on later tonight. Just ping me here on my page. Remember to save time with http://reftag.appspot.com for gBooks; whatever GoogleBook you're inside, just copy-paste your address bar into the blank at RefTag and it'll produce a full footnote for you. MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:13, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's all done. You've made my Christmas. Julia.Rose.19 (talk) 17:26, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Julia.Rose.19, published as Dudley Dudley (politician). Overall in decent shape, but there are a few improvements you can make:
  • Please proofread for spelling and punctuation. Mainly, you have a lot of places where your period or comma is put after the footnote code, when for the sake of tidiness of appearance it should go before. Also in some places you put two or three spacebars rather than one (hitting "space" twice is a relic of the typewriter age).
  • Note at the top the "orphan" tag. Try to find other articles that mention Dudley, or could mention her, and either link her name (if it's there) or else add some brief mention of her (like add a sentence about her anti-refinery mission to the article about the town where it happened). Once you fix that you can remove the WP:Orphan tag.
  • No huge hurry at all, but if you want to tidy up footnotes, check out WP:REFNAME for an easier way to code. I did Refname fixes on your "How Aristotle Lost..." and the "Oral History..." footnotes. Note now how at the bottom of the page instead of being listed over and over, there's one unified footnote with "1a, 1b, 1c" used for the multiple appearances of the notes. Not mandatory, just if you want to tidy up.

I will work on this. Thank you. It means so much to me. Because it is published I am so happy you published it and am so thankful for your help. Julia.Rose.19 (talk) 18:29, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I just saw the movie recently, looked up the article and then got hooked on the topic. It's a pity I can't find a clearer photo. The one I uploaded is from a bad photocopy, and he's little more than an silhouette. Paul B (talk) 17:24, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Saccharo Wine

Mr. Vanitas,

I changed my submission for Saccharo Wine to reflect a more neutral point of view. I am not the creator of the wine, however I am an owner of a winery that makes it. Currently there is no federal accepted name for this type of wine. It is classified under "other wine".

Basi, and Kilju if offered for legal sale in the United States would also fall under the classification of "other wine". However even "other wine" according to federal law, must have a name that accurately reflects the nature of the wine. Saccharo is the latin word for "from Sugar". Like Basi, that is fermented in clay jars, and Kilju that is made from any type of sugar product, Saccharo uses only cane sugar of at least 50% then blends other natural agricultural products other than grapes to account for other sugars. Traditional wine making techniques to ferment the cane sugar base to 12%, as well as traditional racking and aging practices are also used.

Saccharo Wine is currently not for sale in the United States. It is a real wine, that is currently being classified by the federal govt.

It will be for legal sale in Nov 2014.

A cup of tea for you!

Hey, Matthew, don't take that IP rant to heart. It looked to me as though you were going out of your way to be helpful. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:15, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rejection of AFC on Year Walking

Good afternoon! I noticed you had rejected my submission of "Year Walking" in the Articles for Creation section, citing "unreliable sources". The three resources I used (although in the Swedish language) were perfectly verifiable. The Nordisk Familjebok is an old Swedish encyclopaedia - one of the most comprehensive ever produced in the language (at around 38 volumes). www.ne.se is the site of the Nationalencyklopedin, a very comprehensive contemporary encyclopaedia, with the number of articles on the site hovering around 200,000. Wärend Och Wirdarne, by Gunnar Olof Hylten Cavallius, is an old book from 1921, detailing Swedish folklore and pagan practices. Is there any reason I should be aware of that these sources are not reputable? Thanks, Calmbit (talk) 13:44, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Calmbit I believe the issue for both of us is that the "Nationalencyklopedin" appeared to be hosted by an unknown agency, this "Projekt Runeberg", and for me at least I (perhaps mistakenly) thought the Ne.se was user-submitted content like Wikipedia or IMDB. In either case, they're both reference books, which is overall not ideal because we're aiming for an exploration of the topic more than just a basic definition. It may well be that these refs are decent, but our quick initial sweeps raised some concerns that we'd like to clarify. For your next review, you may want to put a short note at the top explaining briefly what the refs are so folks feel comfortable with the reliability of the cite.
For me one of the biggest things is that there is almost no mention of your title-term "year walking" on the whole Internet other than a number of what appear to be interconnected blog posts. If the term Årsgån is commonly used to describe this practice in English, that may be a more reasonable title, and you can explain what it literally means somewhere in the first sentence.
It's an interesting topic, it's just a bit hard for reviewers to figure out the sourcing, so it'd be easier if you had one or two books that were published by serious academic outfits (University of Uppsala or something) so folks could now that peer-reviewed anthropology works explore the issue. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:26, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your concerns, and I thank you for bringing them to my attention - I'll rectify them ASAP. Year Walking is (sadly) a topic not commonly recorded within history, and finding resources on it is not an easy task. However, I shall attempt to grab more resources from official academic outfits. The topic, with it's traditional death around the beginning of the 1800's, doesn't exactly carry to contemporary history. Thanks for everything! Calmbit (talk) 18:20, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Conversion

Hi Matt, I wanted to discuss why Urban Conversion page was denied. You mentioned that this was not a notable organization. The show airs on PBS, and we wanted to ensure that our viewers can learn more about our show. It is going into it's second season. What makes a company notable enough for a Wiki page? Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Thomas Machin, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Rochambeau and Fort Montgomery (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello MatthewVanitas. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Space-time finite element method".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Space-time finite element method}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 16:07, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The V-50 Lectures - Article Rejected

Matthew Vanitas,

Thanks for the fast reply and the feedback re: John Pugsley' article "This Is the Way to the Stars" as an example of a reliable source. Of course, I'll reference that article as well as a book by noted Libertarian writer Brian Doherty called "Radicals for Capitalism; A Freewheelin History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement," pgs 323 to 326, which talks about the V-50 Lectures.

Although The V-50 Lectures profoundly affected thousands of people's lives there is, unfortunately, very little written about them. This is what I'm trying to fix by creating this Wikipedia article. The people who attended these lectures are getting old and dying off and this valuable and interesting movement within the American Libertarian movement shouldn't be lost.

Jay Snelson (who is the Creator of The V-50 Lectures) wrote a book just before he died called "Taming the Violence of Faith" which is for sale on Amazon -- I can reference that, as well.

Do you think that will be adequate?

ch — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chasholloway (talkcontribs) 19:08, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Chasholloway, fundamentally as long as you can show WP:Reliable, WP:Secondary coverage of the event and its impact, we can have an article. So we don't need things written by the lecturer (except to what limited degree we can briefly cite his mission statement or later musings about it). Primarily what we need is other academic authorities saying something along the lines of "hey, those V50 lectures were really important, and here's why..." The more neutral and authoritative the later commentator the better, the article has to be through "outside eyes".
One thing I really want to emphasize, the issue unfortunately, very little written about them is absolutely not an encyclopedia issue. That issue is a pressing one for WP:Primary researchers like journalists and academic researchers. An encyclopedia cannot accept WP:Original research, like "Chas tracks down an attendee and asks for their recollections." Such an interview, however, would be great if someone makes the intereview, and gets an article published in the National Review of "V50 Hits Home: We Interview Four Men Whose Lives Were Changed". We can't cite a raw interview since it isn't yet peer reviewed and endorsed by an authoritative knowledge broker, but if it gets published in the professional realm we can cite it, does that make sense? So when people complain that Wikipedia is stifling them by not accepting their personal awesome knowledge of rural Rajasthani cuisine, and it "must go on Wikipedia because it is not recorded on the internet", our answer is hey, don't hassle us, get a real anthropologist out there so a real pro can observe and record this culture!
I'm on and off of reviewing, so don't wait on my or anything. Just find as many WP:Secondary sources as you can that verify the basic facts and give evidence of how significant the event is seen as, and then hit Resubmit. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:08, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
