The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Juan de Cuyo (Latin: Archidioecesis Sancti Ioannis de Cuyo) is in Argentina and is a metropolitan diocese. Its suffragan sees include La Rioja and San Luis.

History

In 1826 Pope Leo XII founded the archdiocese as the Vicariate Apostolic of San Juan de Cuyothe from territory taken from the Diocese of Córdoba del Tucumán.[1] Pope Gregory XVI elevated it to a diocese on 19 September 1834. The diocese was elevated to an archdiocese by Pope Pius XI on 20 April 1934. On the same date it lost territory to create the dioceses of Mendoza and San Luis.[2]

November 2013 violence

On approximately 23-25 November 2013, protestors from the National Meeting of Women in Argentina vandalized the cathedral and physically assaulted men praying in front of the diocesan Cathedral of San Juan de Bautista in counter protest.[3][4]
