Notable occurrences
- LeBron James returned to his home state and the Cleveland Cavaliers after four years with the Miami Heat. James controversially announced his departure from Cleveland in a nationally televised special - The Decision - on July 8, 2010.
- The Charlotte Bobcats were renamed the Charlotte Hornets on May 20, 2014 to begin the 2014–15 season.[31] The newly established Hornets retain the 10 year history of the Bobcats, as well as regain the original Charlotte Hornets team records from the 1988–89 NBA season through the 2001–02 NBA season. The New Orleans Pelicans retain the remaining history that exists under the New Orleans Hornets name from the 2002–03 NBA season through the 2012–13 NBA season including the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets name from the 2005–06 NBA season through the 2006–07 NBA season.
- The Cleveland Cavaliers win the #1 pick in the NBA draft for the second year in a row, as well as the third time in four years and the sixth time in franchise history. It also ties the lowest percentage possible in the modern-day draft lottery with the Chicago Bulls back in 2008, as well as marks the second time one team got the #1 draft pick for the second year in a row. Their selection was Andrew Wiggins, the second straight Canadian player to be selected as the No. 1 pick.
- The Houston Rockets and the Minnesota Timberwolves will play at the Mexico City Arena on November 12, 2014, while the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks will play at The O2 Arena in London on January 15, 2015. - Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love on August 23rd, 2014, the soonest date allowed by Wiggins signing his rookie contract 30 days earlier. The trade of Wiggins also marked the second time since the NBA-ABA merger that a #1 draft pick would be traded to another team without playing for the team he was initially drafted under.
- The San Antonio Spurs made history by hiring Becky Hammon as the first full-time female assistant coach. Hammon, a guard for the WNBA's San Antonio Stars, joined the Spurs coaching staff upon her retirement at the conclusion of the 2014 WNBA season.
- During the month of September, Atlanta Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson would end up selling his share of the Hawks after self-reporting an e-mail he received that was considered inappropriate and potentially racist back in 2012. Around that same time, general manager Danny Ferry would leak out remarks that player Luol Deng "had a bit of African in him" from a transcript he received, which would eventually result in Danny taking an indefinite leave of absence and having coach Mike Budenholzer taking on the job until his potential return.
- On October 6, 2014, the NBA announced a new TV deal with ESPN and TNT that's worth $24 billion on a 9 year deal. Starting in the 2015-16 NBA season, the NBA's value would go from $930 million to $2.6 billion per year, which would also increase each team's salary cap from $63 million to around $88.8 million.
