Hugo's first project for the label [[NON Records]] was entitled Ganz Nackische. After a few songs, he decided to ditch the hard sound of this project for a more tropical one. Only being asked to fill in for a cancelled artist was the name Palmbomen chosen, which is the [[Dutch]] word for palm trees. The name was chosen “because of the absolute absence of palm trees in Holland, they represent somewhat of a small detail of utopia” notes Hugo <ref>{{cite web|last1=Flood|first1=Kathleen|title=The Voyage To Something Better: Q&A With Palmbomen|url=http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/the-voyage-to-something-better-qa-with-palmbomen|website=The Creators Project|accessdate=18 October 2014}}</ref>.
Hugo debuted his music as Palmbomen when he and label mate HyperHyper were asked to fill in for a canceled artists at a music festival in the Netherlands. The two accepted the request and decided to call the project “Palmbomen”, the dutch word for palm trees. Besides reflecting the tropical, 80s sound of the music, the name was chosen , according to Kai Hugo, “because of the absolute absence of palm trees in Holland, they represent somewhat of a small detail of utopia.” This was not the case. I actually wanted to start a project with 'Swiere Mullers' and we actually did a little jam together. Then we came up with the name but never did something with the whole project. Then I got asked to fill a gap on a festival and because they wanted a name for the posters right away I gave them the name Palmbomen because we didnt do anything with that project. Then I started working hard to make some songs in a week connected directly with the lights and that was the start.

Kai soon made the new Palmbomen project his main focus, developing material for what would become his debut EP. Label owner and friend Bear Damen produced initial work for Hugo in his home, which also served the recording studio. Damen and Hugo captured an antiquated sound through extensive use of vintage vocoders, synths, and analog boxes. The result of these recording sessions eventually culminated the 6 track debut “Moon Children” EP, which was released on NON Records in July of 2010. A release party organized by NON at Amsterdam's Trouw included Palmbomen's first official live performances with support by Toro Y Moi and Memory Tapes. The EP received positive reviews from media outlets Vice Magazine, The Examiner, 3VOOR12, and others. Such favorable critical reaction towards “Moon Children” EP attracted the attention of french music and fashion label Kitsune, which included the title track on their 10th Kitsune Maison Compilation in November of 2010.

Palmbomen is the stage name of Amsterdam, Netherlands based musician Kai Hugo. Palmbomen has released on NON Records, a label he helped found with his friend Bear Damen[1], and French label Kitsuné Maison. Palmbomen has also scored the soundtrack for the Playstation Vista game Metrico as well as been featured on the soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto V.

Beginnings

Hugo's first project for the label NON Records was entitled Ganz Nackische. After a few songs, he decided to ditch the hard sound of this project for a more tropical one. Only being asked to fill in for a cancelled artist was the name Palmbomen chosen, which is the Dutch word for palm trees. The name was chosen “because of the absolute absence of palm trees in Holland, they represent somewhat of a small detail of utopia” notes Hugo [2].

Moon Children and Kitsuné Maison

Kai recorded material using mostly antiquated equipment to capture a vintage sound for what would be his debut EP. Moon Children was released on NON Records in July of 2010, with a release party Amsterdam club Trouw. The live performance, with support by Toro Y Moi and Memory Tapes, featured a custom built live light set. The EP received positive reviews from media outlets Vice Magazine, The Examiner, 3VOOR12, and others. The EP attracted the attention of french music and fashion label Kitsuné Maison, which included the title track on their 10th Kitsune Maison Compilation in November 2010 [3].

Night Flight Europa

Following extensive touring of the live light set, Palmbomen relocated to Berlin to record a full length record. Hugo further developed his analogue sound to incorporate more elements of Ambient House, Psychedelia, and Italo Disco. The resulting "Night Flight Europa" was released by NON Records in January 2013, and received positive reviews from The Fader, Red Bull Music Academy, and Decoder Magazine. The album also caught the attention of Belgian Electronic Music duo Soulwax, who invited Palmbomen to open for them at their annual Soulwaxmas celebration in 2012 [4].

Grand Theft Auto V, Metrico, and USA

Following an extensive tour in support of the new record, Palmbomen was asked by Soulwax if they had permission to remix his song 'Stock' for inclusion on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. The song is featured on the duo's radio station, Soulwax Radio [5]. This sparked a new connection to the video game industry, with Sony commissioning Palmbomen to create the soundtrack for their Playstation Vista game Metrico, released in August 2014 [6]. Hugo left Berlin for Los Angeles in 2014, where he continues to score music for video games, movies, and records as Palmbomen.
