Ahl Al-Bayt World Assembly(Persian: مجمع جهانی اهل البیت) is an international non-governmental organizations(INGO) that established by a group of elites of Shiites under the supervision of the great Islamic authority of the Shia world in 1990 to identifying, organizing, educating and supporting the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Establishment and first conference

One of the most important goals of Iranian Government after victory of Islamic Revolution was unity among the World Muslims. In order Ahl Al-Bayt World Assembly was established in 1990. One of the important goals of this assembly is unity among the Shiites and Sunnis.[1] The first it`s conference was held on 21 May 1990. More than three hundred scholars and Muslim elites specially Shiites had attend in this conference. At the end of this conference,by a letter, the participants asked Ayatollah Khamenei to establish Ahl Al-Bayt Assembly and he accepted this request.[2][3] In the it's statute is ordained that Tehran is the main center of this INGO.[4]

About why the establishment of the Assembly, according to Abdul Karim Soroush, the establishment of Ahl Al-bayt Assembly was a counter-offensive of traditionalist Shiite Clerics inside the power elite against Tehran`s Ecumenical Society (Persian: مجمع تقریب مذاهب) because they suspected it of developing tendencies towards encroaching upon the Sunni World.[5]

The following topics were discussed at the first conference:

  • Ahl Al-Bayt and their scientific and cultural heritage,
  • Ahl Al-Bayt and leading Ummah,
  • Ahl Al-Bayt and unity of Ummah,
  • Ahl Al-Bayt and their practical role in the maintenance of Islam,
  • Ahl Al-Bayt and services of Islamic Revolution influenced by their teachings,
  • Human values and ideals of Ahl Al-Bayt and their methods to implement them in social life,
  • The situation of followers of Ahl Al-Bayt and ways of support them and raising their dignity.[6]

Fundamentals

General Assembly

General assembly is a group of Islamic scholars and religious and cultural figures of the Islamic world as its members. According to statute General Assembly is held every four years. The first meeting of the general assembly was held in February of 1994 and more than 330 members of this assembly from 61 countries and also scholars and researchers in different fields from different Islamic countries.[3][4]

Supreme Council

Some elite members of the general assembly have been or are members of this council.According to statute members of this council are chosen by Vali-e-Faqih for five years.[4] The council is responsible for the adoption of policies, programs, budgets assembly and supervision of the Executive assembly area.[7]

General Secretary

The first General Secretary of this assembly was Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Taskhiri. He directed this assembly from 1990 until 1999. The second General Secretary was Ali Akbar Velayati.[5] The third General Secretary was Ayatollah Mohammad Mahdi Asefi.[8] Hojjat al-Islam Mohammad Hasan Akhtari, a former Iranian ambassador to Syria, is the the current General Secretary of assembly.[9]

Secretariat

Secretariat is composed of The Department of Cultural Affairs, The Department of International Affairs,The Department of Executive Affairs, The Department of Economic Affairs, Office of the Secretary General, Office of Planning and Supervision Office.[10]

  • Defense of rights of Muslims specially Shiites,
  • Trying to strengthening Islamic unity against propaganda of enemies of Islam,
  • Preservation of cultural heritage and honors of Islamic Civilization,
  • Contribute to the development, improvement and reform of the cultural, economic, social and other aspects of followers of Ahl Al-Bayt.[4][11]
