The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a 2015 British comedy-drama film directed by John Madden and written by Ol Parker. It is the sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and features an ensemble cast featuring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, Tamsin Greig, Tena Desae, Dev Patel, Lillete Dubey, David Strathairn and Richard Gere.

On 29 October 2012, Vulture reported that screenwriter Ol Parker was consulted to deliver a treatment to Fox Searchlight Pictures executives for a sequel titled The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2, most of the cast agreed to come back.[5] On October 28, 2013, Radio Times revealed that the cast will be flying to India to shoot the sequel film in January 2014.[3]

Casting

On 2 December 2012, Showbiz411 told in the news that Colin Firth and Helen Mirren may join the ensemble cast of the film.[6] On 28 October 2013 Radio Times told that Penelope Wilton confirmed the cast including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie, who will be returning for the sequel film, set to start in January 2014.[3] On 30 October, Deadline reported that Richard Gere is in talks to join the ensemble cast of the sequel.[7] Later on 10 January 2014, Gere confirmed his new role in the film; other newcomers also added to the film include Tamsin Greig and David Strathairn.[4]

Filming

Principal photography began on 10 January 2014 in Jaipur, India.[8]

Marketing

The first trailer was released on 7 August 2014, with the title The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel announced.[9]

Release

The film was released in the United States March 6, 2015.[10]
